Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf mk1 track cars

    Hello gang,

What would be required to get a mk1 golf to crack sub 2.00mins at Phillip Island circuit?
Future plans are to build a club level track car.

    Engine? Hp? Tire width? etc..$$$??

Ran into this car on VWvortex, although a big dollar item I got all inspired!

    Cheers,
    Morgan

    Hey Morgan.
That shouldn't be too hard buddy.
I haven't run a Golf at Phillip Island but going on my simple formula to make a comparison in 2002 Mirage Cup cars were doing 1.53s at the Island and 1.07s at Symmonds Plains .That same year we had a street Golf doing 1.10s and our Mirage 1.07s.Thats some 3 plus seconds difference at Symmonds Plains.
Because PI is longer I estimate the gap to be more like 5 plus seconds.
Therefore going on 2002 Mirage times of 1.53 seconds add another 5 and I estimate our Golf at the time to be capable of 1.58 second times.
There were lots of areas where we could have improved the Golf easily back then so even faster times wouldn't be that hard.

Nope. It's a chequebook car built by Dynamic Racing Solutions in the US -> http://www.drsperformance.com/

I think it's pretty ugly compared to some of the Berg Cup ones - not that I wouldn't have it for nothing

            God dammit,
I really need to get some more info and photo's on my uncle's mk1 racer...

All I know is mk1 2 door, white, big blue VW symbol on the side, 16v destroked motor, motec m800 (seriously), caged and bucket seated, using mk3 steelies and semi slicks... Presumably ITB's...\

Some melbourne boy's know Bruce as an instructor down at Phillip Island, and I know he's driven some of your cars...

He's not allowed to drive my car when i go down there, it'd be like being on my learners all again with my dad screaming at me...LOL!

I think i know who your uncle is, he done a speach at the vw club of vic once about racing at phillip island. Did he recently crash that car? cause i think the front end of my old mk1 gti that i wrote off is on it, im not certain though.

Someone made a mistake in front of him, and he had no-where to go...
                  bummer...

nah, dad bought it off one of his mates, I've known the car most of my life i was about 10 when it was getting the restoration and gti gear put into it. It was dying of rust so dad bought it off him then i accidently slid it into a tree one wet night.
