Brad,
Yeah mine (R5 Touareg) and a couple of others is the exception. 'Same' quality level doesn't quite cut it.
I had one place say that we 'recommend' this oil, 507, but not the same.
Last lot of oil I got was cheap from a dealer because it was out of date.
Still looking.
The bit below says not suitable for my model.
From exxon mobilAccording to ExxonMobil, Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30 is of the following quality level:
API CF
Volkswagen (Gasoline) 502 00 / 503 00 / 503 01
Volkswagen (Diesel) 505 00 / 505 01 / 506 00 / 506 01
All VW engines with the exception of Unit-Injector / Pump-Duse TDI without LongLife Service and without DPF between 1999-2003 and R5/V10-TDi before model year 2006

Not that it would negate the costs in any way, but I would have thought that you could safely use 507.00 approved oil as long as you were willing to change it more often.... but this is only really a discussion opener, rather than me saying that is really the case.
I was always under the impression the xxx.01 spec was for the variable service interval option - where the oils have the extra unobtanium as brad so elegantly puts it, in order to prolong the high pressure lubricity of the oil.

I'm stuck with the 506.01 oil and as long as I can get it I wouldn't dare to try 507.00 in it. The AXE engine in my T5 was made in 2004 and as such has to be run on 506.01 only, however the owner's manual was also referring to 505.01.
Yes, the 506.01 oil costs a bit more, but it's still cheaper than the engine repairs
So, I would rather use 507 as well because aussies don't do long life. But from my research, the 506.01 IS a different oil to the 507 and I will use it as long as I can get it.
But, a supplier I found says that Fuchs won't be importing the 506.01 anymore. I bought his remaining stock. I hope my car last for 4 more years or so.
