Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Being something of an oil level checking obsessive have to admit I struggle to read the level in my Skoda Superb 118. Never found a stick which is so difficult to read with certainty. Combination of the bends in the measuring area and the oil not standing out very clearly against colour of the stick. (Plus I'm getting on and the eyesight not what it was&#128521
Wondered about painting bottom of stick white to improve contrast. What sort of "paint" would be safe to use after giving the stick a good clean?

Far better idea would be to get a fine file and cut a nick on one edge at the right level. Wipe it off carefully after doing it.

To read correctly Pull dipstick wipe it, put it back, leave for 10secs Then pull it out and swivel it to catch the light on the oil.

I wouldnt put paint in the sump for any reason and if the oil is clean it wont help much anyway

Might give that a try Hillbilly. Like you I was just a bit sceptical about having "painted bits" in the sump!

Agree with Hillbilly (that drives me insane ). You just have to twist the stick a bit & catch it in the light. Possibly drop your standards a bit eg: if it looks about right it probably is. Your allowed a few mm either way.
