The Elf Rubia range of lubricants are primarily designed for heavy duty diesel engines. As such, I would not expect it to have any formal VW approvals, and indeed it doesn't. The workshop is either misinformed, ignorant or lying - contact Elf and ask for yourself.

Not saying you can't use heavy duty lubricants in passenger cars (many people do) but IMO it's not the optimal solution for a VW TSI engine.

For a lubricant to pass VW 502.00 usually requires a synthetic base (not semi-synthetic or mineral base). I think that's an important consideration IMO, especially for any petrol engine with a turbo.

The manual says it should have 504 for time servicing which is what mine gets as its only done 9800km in two years.

I d/loaded the Approved oil list from ER Win and the only 504/507 ELF oil is either Solaris LLX or Excellium which is a diesel oil anyway.
I have written them a letter voicing my displeasure and asking for a refund of the oil and filter price.

I guess I should go and buy the correct oil and filter and do a change myself.

Isnt the sump plug supposed to be replaced as well at oil changes Read somewhere it should be.

I would personally recommend replacing it everytime. Otherwise, you'll be replacing sumps every now and then when the thread strips out.

You could replace the washer, but that'd mean cutting the old one off, as it's captive. For the $4.00 or so, I replace them every time, without fail.

That's interesting, since Volkswagen usually permit the use of either 502.00 or 504.00 in their TSI engines, if the car is not on LongLife* servicing.

          *Variable 15 000 km/1 year - 30 000 km/2 year intervals, as determined by the car via built-in sensors.

504.00 has increased performance requirements compared to 502.00 - so if your car is really only supposed to use 504.00 oils, then that's what I'd expect the workshop to use, especially during the warranty period.

There are specific combinations Volkswagen approve (e.g. 501.01/505.00, 502.00/505.00, 504.00/507.00, etc). They normally don't approve any lubricant unless it's dual rated (i.e. petrol/diesel). For instance, you will never find a lubricant on the market that only meets 504.00 but not 507.00, or vice versa.

For any car, replacing the sump plug washer when draining oil through the sump is best practice.

If that involves replacing the sump plug as well, then so be it.

My manual says 504 for "with longlife" 502 "without longlife" so what should it be

No matter which, the oil used is not an Approved VW oil and therefore shouldnt have been used in a 9000km car IMHO Is it not better to use the highest spec oil ( 504/507) rather than just "One that will do" ???

              504/507.

You can't go wrong. Volkswagen Australia have specified this for our market, in all vehicle across the range, built since 2007.

You must use 502.00 at the very least. Approved 502.00 lubricants are absolutely fine to use, just not as advanced as 504.00 is all.

You can use 504.00 even if your vehicle isn't on the LongLife regime, but it must be changed at the same fixed intervals - no later than 15 000 km/1 year.

It should not have been used regardless of mileage if the vehicle is under warranty.

I recommend the use of 504/507 lubricants, particularly in FSI/TSI/TDI engines.

504/507 is backwards compatible with VW's older specifications like 503/506, 502/505, etc (except for the R5 TDI and V10 TDI), but I don't specifically recommend 504/507 in older engines when 502/505 will do just fine in these applications.

Have changed oil and filter to Castrol approved 504/507 so should be OK now.

Garage who stuffed up giving reasonable refund so I wont name them or go back there either
