  • Polo 6r, what oil?

Hi all, this may sound stupid but please for give me if it is.
I have a 6r polo 77tsi and was looking through the manual to find what oil to use. All I found was the vw spec. Vw 502 000 and when searched on the net (read: googled) I found various different oil weights that comply with the standard. My question is, how can I know what oil weight is best for my car? Some of the weights found are as follows; 0w-30, 5w-40 and 10w-40

Thanks in advance for any info

Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow longlife 5W 30 is the recommended oil by VW, according to the pamphlet included in my owners manual.

Penrite Oil - A Better Class Of Oil there is a product selector on the website.

Your owners manual also tells you what specification oil is required - in the Engine Specification booklet.

        Hi,

Any oil that is 5W-30 and meets VW 502.00. The approvals are normally printed on the back of container and can be found on the oil manufacturers web site. Many have a "Lube Match" or similar page in which you enter your cars details and it will recommend the correct oil. FYI VW 504/507 supersedes 502/505 and therefore is also suitable.

From other thread in this forum,

Supercheap have Shell Helix Ultra Extra on sale for $50. Thanks to Ian.

Also when choosing the oil for your new car, keep in mind that the latest oil will be the most suitable for the latest emission devices in your car, so saving a bit of money to buy a cheaper oil, doesn't have to be the most economical for you in the long run. I use 504/507.00 for every engine from 2004. The notorious TSI oil burners could benefit from 5W40 or 10W40 but make sure that it is suitable for your engine.

Despite my above post I had the POLO serviced today and they put ELF 10 w 40 semi synthetic in it

I questioned it but they said it was an approved oil for a 77TSI

I use ELF oils but, I wouldn't use ELF Competition 10W40 in your Polo. I doubt that it's approved oil, the specs aren't that clear about it.

Your engine requires a lubricant that is approved to either 502.00 or 504.00

The only VW standard that Elf lubricants with an SAE grade of 10W-40 (there are several) are approved for, is 501.01 (petrol) and 505.00 (diesel).

Elf Competition SM 10W-40 (if that is what the mechanic used) is not one of those products - it is not on any one of VW's list of approved lubricants (to date).

Dont know what it is but was just over $9 a litre They only listed it as 10W 40 semi synthetic.

I asked if it was approved VW oil and he fudged a bit and said yes I said I thought it should be 504/507 and he said it was suitable.

Dont think I will go back there but they do specialise in VW

$9 a litre pretty much says this is just an oil designed for everything else.

On asking they say it is approved and is ELF RUBIA POLYTRAFFIC 10w 40

I cant find anywhere that says it is approved by VW

                              Probably because it isn't.

Sadly, there's a few too many cowboys out there claiming to be 'experts' in the product.
