thanks for the heads up.. this is shell helix ultra extra right?
I went to Repco at Rockdale (Sydney) today. All oil in 4 to 6 litre containers is on special at 25% off.
I found Nulon 5W-30 Euro and Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30 as the only 504.00/507.00 oils on the shelves.
The Nulon 5W-30 Euro was $83.99 less 25% = $62.99 for 5 litres.
(The normal Nulon 5W-30 (non-Euro, non 504.00/507.00) was beside it on the shelf marked at $20 less than the Euro variant, for comparison.)
Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30 was $3 more than the Nulon Euro.
I bought 2 x 5-litre containers of the Nulon Euro.
They also had 10-litre containers of Nulon Euro marked at $150 on the shelf and $156 scanned at the checkout but these did not qualify for the 25% discount and so it was cheaper to buy 2 of the 5-litre containers.

If you bought that Nulon oil for the TDI engine then keep in mind that it's not VW approved.
does this mean VW504.00 spec is merely met or approved?
"....Shell Helix Ultra Extra exceeds these specifications: ACEA C3; BMW LL-04; MB approval 229.51; VW 504 00/507 00; Porsche C30....."
VW maintains a list of approved oils.
To get on that list, lubricant manufacturers send their product to VW to be tested, and upon meeting the required criteria, gain VW approval.
To date, the Nulon product isn't on that list. The Shell product is.
That's not to say the Nulon product is deficient in any way (for all we know, it may well be a fine product), but to say that it meets 504/507 requirements is purely their claim - a claim which has not been tested by VW.
Any of my regular customers can get that Shell 5W30 Ultra/Extra from me for the same price any time untill Christams, which also means the cost of engine oil on the service invoice is $10/L. You should use that opportunity and if the service is due, book it in, even if it's booked for January, I will guarantee you the same price.
I owned 6 VW Diesels when I was in the UK and the one time my mechanic decided to use Non VW approved oil, I blew a gasket on the 15 minute drive home and had the most awful high pitch turbo whistle. Coincidence or not - is it worth the risk for a few $? I was getting quotes on replacement turbos - everything, all because the tech was trying to save $15 on oil.
