  • Oil instead of grease question

Hi, I have just had my Golf in for its first service at a VW dealership service dept and noticed the hinges, locks etc were lubricated with oil instead of the usual grease. The oil looks like engine oil (or olive oil) and has made a bit of a mess around the door sill/sides. I rang the service department to ask what they use, and they said grease or WD40, but this yellow fluid is neither. Is this acceptable or normal practice? The service dept said if I had any concerns to bring the car in, but I would like to be armed with some information, please if anyone could help before I go in and make a fool of myself...

Do you have a squeaky door, if not why do you worry about it. A trained mechanic should know what to use on the door hinges. Have a little bit of trust.

I took the car in for the scheduled service, there wasn't a problem to begin with, its just that I don't like the mess the oil makes and wondered if this was the done thing... My car was in pristine condition before this ...

I use only spray grease from the pressure can on the hinges, but should someone spray oil on the hinges, I would just wipe the excess of the oil of, if there was any.

The oil can be used too as long as it doesn't affect the paint.

Thanks for your replies, on re-reading my post it does sound a bit anal retentive...
I'll leave it and clean it up next wash, thanks again.

It's OK, we (incl. me) all car enthusiasts are probably like that.
