  • Mk5 GTI engine oil useage

I have done a bit of searching but it doesn't appear there are any threads relating to my question(s).

    1. In general how much oil does your Mk5 GTI go through. I ask the questions because my friend has that car. She seems to have gone through quite a bit of oil in the first 10,000 kms - probably around 3 litres. Is this normal for the car?

    2. I note in another thread on here that only the Mobil Synth 5W-40 meets the VW specs. Does anyone here use something other than Mobil for their GTI?

    Cheers

that doesnt sound right, infact its not possible im not doubting you i know they use abit of oil but thats abnormal useage for a vehicle with so low ks i used to work for vw and they would regularly use 500 ml to a litre every 4000 but 3lt in 10000 is abit strange i would take it to the dealership and complain and ask them to find out why this is occuring along with a fault diagnosis print out,as for the oil mobil 1 is what i use in everyone of my cars and customers cars but also use motul its expensive but well worth it i could recomend goin for a heavier 10w 50w oil for turbocharged vehicles see how it goes.

thanks for the reply William. The 3 litres is an estimate only as this particular female gti owner never one checked her oil since purchased new six months ago!! Her oil light came on last night and she rang me. I went round and pulled the stick and shock horror very little oil on the stick, and what there was of it looked like crap. I went and got her some more mobil 1 and put it in. Started engine and let run, oil light off. The dealer she bought it off new told her there was no 1500km service with the gti either. I told her to check oil every second or third fill up of petrol and to get it serviced asap. How people can buy cars and never check the water, oil and air in the tyres is really beyond me.

        Hi Guys,
VW motors can use up to 1lt to 1000klms during run in or during track use. This was adaptable right back in the 80's when VW did a dealer bulletin for the 16v on this oil use
Tell her to get an oil service straight away. 15k is way too long for Aust. conditions. I did my GTI 5 at 2k and at 7.5klms. Basically oil change at every 6months is a good idea n:
My '81 Mk1 GTI has had oil done every 5k from new and the motor is spotless inside.
        Hope this helps.
