Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MKV R32 Oil of Choice

    Hey Guys,

Just wanted to get some feedback from other experienced VW R32 owner regarding oils used in there machines. I understand that Castrol EDGE sport 5w-30 is the recommended product with the manufacturer.

Just wanted to get some feed back on what other people have tried and recommend for the beautiful R32 engine.

Lastly what amount of oil is required for an oil change, as i plan to do this myself, rather then getting stung by the dealer!!!!

    Cheers

i haven't heard of dealers down here in Melbourne using Edge. I've got Castrol SLX Professional in mine which is supposedly the long life oil (Maverick's oil of choice hehehe).

I've also heard that VW have turned to Shell now.

You need 5.5L of oil and I would get the best oil. If VW is using VW504.00 oil in R32 you can get equivalent Penrite Enviro+5W30 (VW approved) for around $70 for 5L. If money is not a problem get 20L drum of Mobil1 ESP 5W30 from Mobil distributor and you have enough oil for future oil changes (life of the oil in storage is 3 years). That's what I would do.

+1 for Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30. It has been sent to VW for testing and approved.

Hard to go past Edge Sport 5w-30 on value though, $35 at Supercrap at the moment.

Castrol Edge Sport 5W30 is different kind of synthetic oil though (look at the label where is it made). I wouldn't use it in my engine.
If you change oil yourself, and once a year only, than $35.00 shouldn't be a deal braker.
I use Penrite and ELF now in my workshop and Penrite is good oil indeed.
