Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

am a bit confused, So which oil is for my Golf V GTI? is VW 502 or 504?

    Which one is better?

I was using Mobil 1 with my previous car. is Mobil 1 suited VW? Are they a good oil for VW?

    Thanks for your reply.

Short answer : "Use VW 504.00 spec oil"

Longer answer : "If you do a search you will find more info about engine oils than what you will know what to do with"

Use Mobil 1 ESP, it is the latest oil from Mobil for VW and you should be able to get it from Mobil oil distributor. In Adelaide it is ROTO OIL ( 08 ) 83598997
I buy it in 20L drums not sure if it's available in 5L containers.

Using 504 00 spec oil on my 2005 golf 2.0FSI. apparently this is supposed to allow "longer service intervals"- is this the only reason why I would use this spec? IF I change my oils at 5k or even 10k instead of the 15k/12months, would I be wasting money on this expensive oil? should I get something cheaper that is at least 502 00 spec instead? and does anybody know if its better to use brand x over brand y, or is all marketing hype and the perceived performance gains/smoothness of the engines all in our heads?

ELF Solaris 5W30 is well priced and has VW 505.01 specs or Penrite HPR Enviro + 5W30 has VW504.00 specs and is around $65.00 for 5L
I would always use the highest quality oil I can get.
From your post I see that you're ready to change oil at 5,000km, so obviously you plan on keeping that car for long, long time, so why just for the sake $20 or more use cheap oil. Higher specs oil will protect your engine better. As long as it is approved for your engine.
