Oils ain't oils

I contacted my dealer yesterday to ask about what type of oil their service department used. The response:

In response to your query, the closest equivalent oil to the type we use here at [name withheld] VW is the Castrol Edge fully synthetic 5W30.

(I now expect comments to the contrary)

I asked about the windshield washer additive too.

The washer additive is called Wurth Blitz Cleaner.

And . . .

. . . we also offer a complimentary oil top up service in which you can come by anytime with no appointment and we will top up your oil and water free of charge.

I wonder, do all VW dealers offer similar service?

While I have always been sceptical about dealership service departments, preferring to use my own mechanic, the complexity of the car and its systems might make it mandatory to use VW service. Given the long service intervals the cost of servicing over a year might be more reasonable.

So what oil do they use?

I assume they're using a 502.00 bulk oil it would be interesting to see if they offer a 504.00/507.00 oil as well. From a purchasing and stock perspective it would make sense to only use 504.00/507.00 as it covers all the VW vehicles (barring two specific models for a short period)

I would have throught that being a VW dealer they would be aware of the requirement to use VW Windscreen Clear (TSB out on this, stops clogging of the jets and prevents issues with pipes coming apart in the rear hatch area - a bargain for a german made product from the sparts area at ~$7 for 1 litre)

Had my first service today 15000km at Central coast VW.
The oil they used was Castrol longlife VW 504 00/507 00
They use the 5 litre container and gave be back the unused leftover oil in the
original container, showing almost 1 litre left from the site gauge.
The cost they charged for the oil was $77.23
Diesel treatment $9.10
screen wash sachet $1.97
All up $299.15

Not bad when they quoted $330 and Chatswood vw quoted $375

But does 502.00 comply with the ACEA B4 standard? B5 standard complies with 508.00 and 508.01 whatever tha means.

Castrol is the oil supposedly used as it is what's mentioned in the manual. The closest I could find to VW spec by Castrol is Edge 0W/40.

All I wanted out of all this was to buy a 1 litre bottle to carry in the car (just in case). Hence, my reluctance to buy anything that is not used by the dealership service centre. And having said that, to play safe, I'd take them up on the offer of a free top up. But, what if I'm hundred of miles away? Would they give me a litre to take in the car?

Mind you. This is all cautionery. So far, my oil consumption is negligible.

Just noticed you have a TDI, you can't use 502.00 oils in a TDI.

Thanks Maverick. I dug into the Castrol site again and found a technical sheet on 5W/30. Buried on the last page is what I was looking for VW505.00.

Why don't you get Castrol Power flow Professional formula 5W/30 from VW dealer? It is correct oil for your TDI.

You could go to Mobil and get the mobil 1 formula ESP... it meets 504.00/507.00 which is probably what your manual stipulates...
