Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk 1 dash

Before I put my moderately cracked dash in my rebuild-Golf Mk1, does anyone know where they can be repaired, or a source of new ones? I got a price from the UK of 440pounds before shipping and import duty - a bit steep I am afraid.

If you can get a GTI (pre '81) dash, they are made of hard plastic and never crack.

There are plenty of places in Sydney that reskin them.
I think Brian (GTI Imports) used to sell them.

If not, there is one under my house.

If you bog up and sand your current one, anyone that does trimming could make you a custom dash. I had one done in black leather and it cost $150 and looked better than stock. I also got to fill in the mono speaker grille and lose the chrome strip on the front

            Which bog?

What did you bog it with, Loon?
Hey...... I reckon this thread should be in "Bodywork and Trim". Anybody agree?

                Car filler, not fibreglass.
The smoother you get it, the better it looks under the leather covering.
I sold the one I got made in the end and decided to run a Mk2 dash, but it looked awesome. Stitching around the clocks and the nacelle, looked sweet. And more modern without the mono speaker or chrome strip.

                        Try TNT

A mate of mine here in Tassie has just bought some wheels in Newcastle. He did a lot of ringing around and TNT came in best @ $85

I put the dash out of an Audi 80 (mid 1980s I think???) that I got from the Canberra VW Centre for a good price in my MK1. Looks OK and no one has any idea what it came out of. More modern gauge cluster too which is nice. Took some time with a soldering iron but so worth it.
