  • DIY Garage Resprays

okay, so, for conveniance sake and to be easier on my budget, ill be doing the respray on my mk1 shell in my garage. Just keen on some tips anyone can give me that has chosen this path before. any secrets to achieving a good spray job?
Ill be dampening the floor to keep the dust down, close all garage doors for no wind, and the rest is up to the sprayer i guess. Possible to get no orange peel on a 2K garage spray?

    Cheerio in advance! [emoji2]

    > plastic dropsheets are your friend.
    > if you are inexperienced, I would reccommend acrylic rather than 2k - its very forgiving. If its a **** job, you just sand it smooth and go again, or sand it smooth and smooth and smootherer and polish.
    > you need about a meter at the minimum beside what you are spraying, or you'll have a lot of trouble handling the gun with air line etc.
    > have bits of cardboard handy.
    > I wouldnt dampen the floor personally, I think its better to keep the humidity low if possible. just clean and vacuum.

The spray its self wont be done by me, ill be getting someone with experience to do it with me.
Im keen on doing 2K for its durability and it apparenty looks best straight out of the gun if done right?

Space is all good, got a 4 car garage all to myself haha

Gldgti have you done this before? Any regrets?

I have painted quite a few mk1s with varying degrees of success. Never had awesome results with spray enamel. Never tried 2k. Had good results with acrylic, with the exception of humidity causing orange peel on a couple of occasions. Look in the seat lounge at my brothers biza, you'll see some painting we did a couple of weeks ago. It turned out not great off the gun because we were in a hurry, but we sanded and polished it and it came up pretty nice.
Its always rewarding, its hard work but its fantastic once done.

Door jams/engine bay in 2k, and acrylic the rest. You can't get the best Finnish out of the gun without a oven with 2k but it's perfect for the jams and bay as you won't need to wet rub and buff latter, also You can get a much better Finnish with acrylic if you spend time on it, and yes Patients.

When do you plan on doing the respray? I can't offer any advice but would love to piggyback off the advice of everyone else. Oh, and we should spray our cars together. It'd be romantic [emoji6]
