  • Cleaning Scirocco R wheels

    Hey All,

I was just wondering if there are any good suggestions for cleaning the Scirocco R wheels, as i washed the car last night and the wheels took longer than the rest of the car. I also have cuts and scratches all over my hands as a result.

Also i was driving this morning and got a scruff mark on one of my wheels , so wondering if anyone know if these can be repaired at all, and if so anywhere good in Sydney (west preferably).

    Cheers

keeping the rims clean is an absolute nightmare, take it to the diy carwash cleaning places, brush and blast them.. or do as I have and plastidip them black. change the coating every 6mths or how long it lasts and you wont notice the break dust and also protect the rim from such scuffs.

as for repair, google mobile rim repair and something will come up.

What's your experience been with plastidip? I've been thinking about doing the same for my scirocco wheels. Want to do a gloss black. I'm assuming you would need to take the wheels off of the car to do the job properly?

sure is a nightmare. I do want to get them dipped eventually, just got other priorities firstly. i used the pressure washer but it doesnt get it all off so i had to get down and scrub.

Thanks will do, hope they can fix it. Its not big but its disappointing.

absolutley is, its the worst thing about the roc, I sometime use a spray varnish purchased from supercheap on them and that seems to keep them clean for about 2 or 3 times longer, but dont do it enough and they always look dirty....

Meh... keeping the wheels clean is always going to be an issue with the Factory brake pads....
              Some tips for you all...

Buy a product called Bowdens Wheely Clean..., spray it on.. agitate if you need to (if really dirty) then wash off...
Personally.. I would remove the wheels... clean them till they are spotless and then coat them with something like Nanolex Wheel coating or one of the other excellent wheel coatings on the market... these coating will make it a cinch to keep the wheels clean... as long as you do it regularly...
Personally I am not fussed on black or sating black wheels.... they just always look dirty.

Yeah these wheels are impossible to clean. Even after pressure hose and autoglym spray there's still crap afterwards.

Was considering the Nanolex product but you'd really have to remove the wheel to apply it thoroughly and I don't know how to do that.

Also got kerb scratches on most of the rims even the right ones...want to get it repaired...but it will more than likely happen again

You cant just spray them and pressure wash them... you do need to agitate whatever cleaning product you use and then high pressure rinse them.
You can do a pretty good job with a Daytona wheel brush... they really are not too hard to clean if done regularly...

Are you plasti dipping the inside of the wheels as well? And when you reapply it are you taking off the existing layers or just adding another coat on?

Don't own a Scirroco but did own Focus XR5 and now Octavia RS with 18" Gemini wheels and both wheels are fiddly and got hammered by dust as most Euro do.

Not wanting to detract other comments, my personal suggestion is invest a little more in quality products and it will make your life much easier and take better care of your wheels.

I clean the wheels using Chemical Guys Diablo, goes on thick, let it dwell a little bit and then agitate using a good wheel brush. I have an assortment of brushes but my fav for those wheels is a short flexible but gentle bristles which reaches between the crevices. You can get longer ones that can reach through the bigger gaps and gets the rear areas. Other good cleaners are Sonax and P21S but are more $$$.

After that I would use IronX, it is a brilliant iron fallout remove you will be shocked at how dirty wheels really are. Spray off, dry. Wipe off wheels with isopropyl alcohol and then apply dedicated wheel sealant - I have used Gtechniq and Art De Shine (wheel) which is very affordable. I have heard FinishKare hi temp sealant is also good but there is a big range to choose from. These sealants will prevent dust from bonding to your wheels keeping them cleaner and when you wash your car next time you should be able to simply pressure wash or use light wipe with mild car shampoo mix (don't use wheel cleaners or strong detergent). Provided you don't let the dust to build up it should be good for 3-6 months. The DIY wash places use pretty strong cleaners so maybe avoid them.

After owning grey wheels I would never own light coloured wheels again or would paint them makes it less noticeable even if you miss
