Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • warn GTI Front seat upolstery

    Hi all,

I have a GTI Mk 5 and want to replace the front Cloth seat upholstery due to fading and wear on the drivers seat

    I have a few questions

    1. Is the upholstery just a cover over the foam that can be removed and replaced easily, or is it sewn into the seat?

    2. Where can i get replacement upholstery? (apart from the dealer who will try and bend me over)

    3. Is there anywhere in brisbane that can make matching factory upholstery??

    4. Will it be cheaper to just replace the whole car in leather??

    All help appreciated

I think someone on ebay is selling the OEM covers by themselves.

A car upholstery place can do full leather for $1800 in any colour/stitching colour you want. I imagine the fabric is quite a bit cheaper.

That's pretty reasonable, given that it's fairly labour intensive you might not find a huge difference in price which might make the leather an upgrade if desired. Don't know how easy it will be to match the tartan design.

You should be able to get some reasonably priced material from the UK.
