  • MK7 - Tinted and Opticoat

    Hi all,

Just got our new MK7 103 tinted and paint protected today... Had the car 2 weeks now and really enjoying it!

We had Dave from Reflect Effect do both jobs.. And I must say he did a great job and it looks amazing!.

So this was his first mk7 tinted and we used the 3M tint and he even managed to do the two front tiny windows near the mirrors! When other were saying it can't be done! The Opticoat also looks great and when it's fully cured will help protect the new car nicely!

    Cheers

    Hey Mate,

I was wondering how they went at removing swirls/decontamination before the opti-coat went on?

I have just had my car done in brisbane by an opti-coat dealer and have essentially just paid $700 to seal in contamination and swirls as far as I can tell. (even though I paid for decontamination and stage 1 machine polish)

    Verryyy annoyed right now.

This is why I have always opted to do everything myself.

Would love to hear your point of view.

    Cheers

    Alex

        MK7 - Tinted and Opticoat

        Sorry to hear!

David from reflect effect did a very thorough prep and clean ( clay bar, etc) before applying Opticoat.. He said there was a bit of contamination left from the dealer prep (car was 1 week old).

Now it's done it looks great, beads well in rain and no issues...

I would suggest you leverage the warranty that comes with it and complain about the quality of the job!

        Cheers

            Hi Guys,

Still going through the initial motions. I'm going to give the car a good wash today and see how bad it actually, regardless though, it does make me wonder how it could be missed if the whole care was infact detailed.

I'm not sure how hard it is to remove opti coat, but it might be the only solution to get back to the contamination and swirls..

The shame is that the car looks great from a couple of m away. Shiny as hell. But yeah, I know it will bug me for years to come if I don't fix it.

            Cheers,

            Alex

I am also in Brisbane, and would be interested to know which dealer you went through? I had John from Scrubs Car Detailing complete my Opti-Coat on the 370Z I had, and cannot recommend him enough. The prep work they completed took almost half a day, as he was not happy to apply until everything was perfect. The red paint on the Nissan's isn't great, and when he finished it looked like a different car. I was given a special warranty card to be logged on the database with Opti-Coat, so you will be covered if you have one of them.

                Hey Mark,

I figured that at this stage I probably shouldn't name and shame as I should give them a chance to rectify the issues first. I have the warranty card, but it's not the opti coat that is the problem. Every time I look at my car I see more and more swirl which shouldn't be there. I don't know if it was hoped that I was too dumb to realise they were there, but I've spent a lot of hours detailing my own cars and I know that a light polish gets out 90% of swirl and that claybarring if done properly, will get rid of absolutely all contamination.

Still gotta call to discuss, see what happens.

                Cheers

                Alex

                  Hey Alex
They can remove the Opti-Coat, so it can be rectified for you. When mine was originally finished, the guys pointed out a blemish in the bonnet and asked me to keep an eye on it because they weren't happy. They came back two weeks later, removed the Opti-Coat from just the bonnet, and completely recoated it to fix.
                  Cheers

Hi Alex, I hope you do get it sorted as being an Opti-Coat applicator you MUST wash, decontaminate and remove swirls before the Opti-Coating process even begins.

Hey Alex, how did you end up going?

I did a tonne of reading on Opticoat and people's reviews, eventually convinced myself it was worthwhile after stumbling on this link (for those of you interested, follow David Fermani on pages 1, 2, 7 and 12):
GRAND FINALE -Optimum Opti-Coating - Durability Test Review!!! - Car Detailing Product Discussion - Autopia

I recently Opticoated my car, windows and alloys. I specifically wanted the alloys done as I wanted to be able to easily wash off the brake dust, which builds up ridiculously quickly!

So far I'm very happy with Opticoat, the treated surfaces bead and sheet water very nicely. The brake dust washes off easily but as you'll see in the video there is a faint layer of residual brake dust, you can see my finger swipe on the 2nd wheel at the 3 O'clock position. A a final spray with QD/equivalent product and a wipe down with a microfibre towel will fully return the alloys to their former glory.
