Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Peeling clear coat.

So, I have picked up a Mk3 with generally good paint except the roof, the roof is peeling in fairly large sections, this car is to be a fairly budget exercise so although I will price up a respray, I will be looking into cheaper options. I'm not expecting a showroom finish, all I want to do is take an edge off the matte look to the roof and give it some of its gloss back so the car presents a little better.

I have used the search function on here and it wasn't helping, and have been watching youtube DIYs and getting some ideas.

Has anyone done a repair on paint like this? It is going to be a bit backyard/budget/compromised I know, but I'm looking for an improvement, not a replacement.

    Help me VWW...

    Peeling clear coat.

    Hey mate,

I had this happen on my mk4. Unfortunately all you can do is to remove the failed clear coat and then hit it with a machine to try and burnish (not polish) the surface of the colour. After this, layer with a few layers of synthetic sealant followed by some layers of wax. That should last maybe 4-5 weeks depending on sun exposure and quality of the paint and then th powdery white finish will come back.

It's an expensive, losing battle I'm afraid.

I had this on my old Jaguar, I never ended up doing anything about it since the mechanics cost me too much!

Search up mightycarmods on youtube. They specialise on budget fixes and mods. They are two sydney based guys.

Im sure i've seen something about this on there.
