Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Polish or Wax?

    just curious what people use.
My last car was black and it was waxed all the time.
This car is silver, it doesnt look that different when I clean it and put on a detail spray!
So, I am contemplating polishing and maintaining it with a detail spray......
    opinions wanted.....thanks

I currently have a Grey WRX (Waiting on my Skoda Yeti). I use Meguiars Deep Crystal, Wet Look every 3 months or so. Quik Wax spray after I have washed with Ultimate Wash n Wax and chamiosed it dry every 2 - 3 weeks. It's kept it looking good.

When i've been lazy and left it over 6 months between polishing, I've use quick clay to bring it up schmik. God knows why they call it quick because while it's very good, quick it is not. It can take me 3 days from wash to finish.

I've kept thise process since new and when I have it really cleaned up I still get asked by non car savy people "Is it new".

There is probably better stuff than Meguiars but I have used it since I was 16 (over 20 years) and it's always been reasonable. I stuggled to use some of there carnauba wax products. I just checked there website and it seems they have dropped some products. The Deep Crystal range used to be 3 parts, Paint Cleaner, Polish, Wet Look. I had bought and tryied the first 2 but never really saw the need. They seem to have dropped them now.

    Happy Days.

polish is too remove swirls from the paintwork.. wax is an LSP which is a protective layer essentially

If your paint is in good condition and no visible swirls I wouldn't worry about polish, just wax it every 3 months (depends how fussy you are).
