Stopping the spread of surface rust until I can afford paint job?! Advice/Options?

Hey all,

The roof on the MK1 has a fair bit of surface rust on it. I recently built the car from a shell up because it was so structurally sound, with the roof the only potential issue.

I need a way to stop the roof from getting any worse while I save up for a paint job come the end of the year.

I was thinking about potentially lightly wet and drying it, then rust converting it and finally putting a light clear coat over to seal it.

Any opinions on how to extend the life of the roof until summer when I will have the time/money to paint it?

I would spray it with the Valvoline Rust Preventative. Valvoline Tectyl 506 Rust Preventative - 400g - Supercheap Auto Australia

do you think i should rust covert the small areas first or just spray this straight over?

and you know if this is suitable to spray directly over paint?

Let me know how this product works since I need to do the exact same thing as you, My roof has surface rust and I want to stop the spread while I save up for a paint job this comming summer. I'm not sure how bad yours it But I would likely just give it a light rub with some wet and dry and then spray it over with the valvoline.

first of all, keep the car as clean and dry as possible, this will help to stop rust. (more of a long term thing, but if you've got dirty and water in the sills all the time, it'll get rustier...)

I'd just stick a bit of rust convertor on it, or some deoderised fishoil. It's a 30 year old car, I don't think the extra 6 months odd will make the roof fall off...

yeah i give the car a wash weekly and give it a light wax to help keep the water off...before i built the car it was sitting in a shed for 5 years and now as soon as some rain has been hitting it, it seems to be reacting faster than I thought...the roof will need to be taken back to bare metal anyway so i may as well try a product on it..hopefully it doesn't turn the roof pink or something ahah

That product is designed to be sprayed into the cavities http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...to%20Australia, so I would try to spray into the roof cavities to stop the rust spreading, it will work equally well on flat surface for a while. Using the rust converter before that would be ideal. I only suggested as a quickest way without too much of the affort.
