Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK1 Bonnet - what is the difference?

In my travels tonight, i was going through all the panels i've collected over the years...
I noticed that one of my bonnets was different. I have a fair few of them, but only one hasn't got the indentation along the front of it.
Can someone please tell me what the difference is?
    I am perplexed...

I'm going to the pub... I may be some time...

Hi .... The bonnet with the depression across the front edge is off a GLS and the one without is off an LS. The LS is the earlier model assembled in OZ and the GLS is German built. Cheers ..... Geoff

Yep, the left hand one in the pic is off an early golf. According to http://www.swallowtail.info/ it's also a feature of swallow tail golfs (German built or otherwise). (Mine has one but isn't a swallow tail.)

I'd say those bonnets are rarer than the later ones and worth hanging on to.

Yep, it's a swallowtail bonnet. (on thef left/behind) we got a mix and match of swallowtail bits during the run of aussie built (assembled) golf 'LS"'s, which is why some cars had the bonnets but not the rear beaver. (like my old two door)

                  Go us!
I was pretty lucky - that bonnet was the one in the best condition too...
Ha - my swallowtail came with an indented bonnet! I think that's why i was so confused.
