anyone know if they're any good?

that after getting it done, i wont need to wax my car anymore?
i ordered a black 118 tsi a few days ago so i was just thinking. or should i jsut put up the hard work and wax every month or something?
i am a bit clumsy and pretty lazy.
also are those stoneguard films any good? has anyone had any experience with it?
i am lazy but i stil would liek to keep my car in condition that i fell in love with at the showroom

In my opinion, all of these 'paint protection' packages aren't very good as they are unnatural and don't last. Your quote above tells me you should have a quick browse through the ''sneak peek at the CCP detailing library'' thread in this forum-section and give it a go yourself it's not overly difficult, and it only takes about an hour and a half each weekend to wash your car nicely (including topping up waxes or sealants with quick detailer sprays). If the car needs a bit of oomph every now and then (or just to get it going) then a professional detailer might be the way to go.

That's only my opinion though - I think doing it right the first time is always a positive lol

I have tried a number of ‘paint protection’ options on test cars and the longest I managed to make a single application last is about 8-10 months. This includes the same products that dealers sell in Australia, as well as US and Europe. Although to clause this it does depend on driving conditions – car kept inside/outside, high mileage etc

However the basis of ‘paint protection’ as mentioned before is that it is a synthetic paint sealant using a combination of cross linking polymers to achieve a strong bond between the coating and the clear coat/paint.

The basics – you can protect your car via a wax or sealant. A wax in the true essence is natural (or mostly at least) think Dodo Juice, Swissvax. Sealants are synthetic or man-made, think Nanolex, Duragloss, Zaino. Premium waxes will offer the best looks, gloss / depth / glow / metallic sparkle but need to be re-applied fairly often: usually between 2 and 5 months. Paint Sealants will offer the best protection, usually lasting 6-12 months between applications, they still have great shine, but some say look glassy and artificial in comparison to wax. (all durations are variable again depending on car life, storage and usage)

There are to date no magically products that ‘protect’ paint for 2, 3 or 5 years – if there were, why would manufacturers not apply it as standard to cars in the factory? I continue to search for options as more technological advances are made and at present the duration from a 2-part Duragloss product or 3 coats of Zaino will provide a good 6 months of protection. We now have Nanolex from Germany that offers 12 months between applications and results are looking really good,. We test and trial every product available and only stock the ones that deliver results so we can create satisfied customers and to be honest for every 10 products with massive claims and promises only 1 or 2 actually deliver.

So to be blunt - as far as Dealers are concerned, it is where they really make their money. The products (paint sealants) cost them about $100 per car, and that is really good margin considering the bottles are generally 100-200ml per application but includes the cost of the ‘warranty’. They then usually have pre-delivery contractors that work on a low hourly rate or a fixed rate of about $40-60 to apply this, more if you have fabric protection. Therefore the mark-up is massive and if you actually start to look into the warranty terms and conditions, they really put the onus on you to care for the vehicle perfectly. If bird droppings are left on for 24+ hours then the warranty is void, for some products if you don’t wash the car often enough then void and if you read into some contracts, they even expect you to return the car every 6 or 12 months for a ‘paint inspection and maintenance treatment’ – at your cost, one dealer quoted about $400 for this service.

So IMHO dealer paint protection is vastly over priced and the warranty is not really worth the paper it is written on.

If you really don’t care for your car or want to look after it yourself, get a professional detailer in once every 6-12 months to give it a mid-level detail and apply a good sealant, condition the leather etc. Price for this starts about $350 so if you calculate that over 3 years (perhaps average term for keeping the car) = $1,200-1,500 including an initial application when new from the dealer. This gives you a great looking car inside and out for 3 years with a strong trade in or sale value due to condition.

If you care for your car and want to look after it yourself then purchase about $200-300 of quality products to set yourself up, these should last about 2-3 years. If you do really care then perhaps look at paint correction for any swirls or wash marks put in every 12 or 24 months which should cost $400-500. So again a complete budget of about $1,200-1,500 will keep your car looking like showroom condition over a 3 year duration, without too much hard work.

So if you are looking at $2,000 from the Dealership (plus interest costs if you are financing) then save yourself some serious cash and go for the regular maintenance option, you will have a better looking car and money in your pocket at the end of 2 or 3 years.

thanks for the advice. i looked over the ccp detailing thread and decided i'll man up and do it myself >.> and save my self some money. maybe gonna get stonguard? to protect from stone chips or does that not work? i think i remember someone on the forum recommending it

I'd recommend it. I haven't used it, but the car's I've seen with it on have proven to be stone-chip free!

Just thought i would throw this in. My old 2001 Mk4 GTi was in need of some TLC so after HEAPS of research i found paintprotectiondirect.

i called up and got the number for the Melbourne person. Got the car done which removed swirl marks, scratches and limited some of the stones chips i got from a trip to QLD. this was the result...



ive got more pics if you wanna see them!
