  • X-Pack Paint protection?

While I was filling out the paperwork to order my new GTI last friday, the rep starts trying to sell me "X-Pack - Xtreme Vehicle Protection"

Paint protection / Carpet & Fabric proctection

She mentioned about $850 for the paint protection... I didnt hear / dont remember a price on the interior protection, but she did say if i buy both, they throw in free window tinting (darkest legal)

It sounds like a good idea, but is it any good?
What should I be paying for it?
What would i expect to pay for window tinting normally?

Best bet it to get a clear ppf film applied aftermarket as it will rpotect the car much better and will cost an equivalent amount.

The Ming Mole tries to sell you the protection package at a discount even though it is worth maybe $300 including tint?

When I ordered my gti the salesperson told me that the 'free' tint they apply is only for the rear window, not any others 'because it already has tint'

what level of tint does the stock gti come with? thinking of getting it retinted

Hey man... I'll pm you with my bank account details, just deposit the $850 in there, and I promise that your car will never have stone chips! My mythical cloak of protection will do just as good a job as the dealers paint protection!

If you are actually concerned about it, the only way to truly protect your paint, is the Paint Protection Film, such as 3M, or Ventureshield. A 'full package' would cost less than $850 and typically contains:
            Front Bumper Lower
            Front Bumper Upper
            Headlights
            Bonnet & Insert
            Front Guards
            Mirror Backs
            Door Cups
            Top of Rear Bumper

The GTI has 'heat insulating tinted glass' as standard. However, it's a very light green tint. I would recommend going to a reputable third party tint company and having a quality 35% tint applied to all windows (except windscreen obviously).

Those prices seem a little higher than the usual... but then you're in Brisbane, so maybe there is less competition than in Sydney?!

I've just recently taken delivery of a GTI VI (Wow! What a car!! But that's another thread) and was absolutely resolute in refusing all attempted paint, interior, tint and roadside-assist packages from the 'special' sales lady that magically appeared when the deal was done.

I made the mistake of ordering paint protection and window tinting on another car in the past and it was an absolute waste of money. Given, the tint was, and still is to this day (dad now drives my old car) quite good, it could've been had for a fraction of the cost I paid. But the paint protection offered by car dealers is an absolute scam!! All I got for the ~$800 'package' was a bottle of car shampoo that I'm convinced was no better than some re-labled Home Brand car shampoo from Woolworths.

If the paint protection is so good, why wouldn't it be included from the factory by quality car manufacturers like VW in the first place, rather than added aftermarket by the dealership?

Save your money... it ain't worth it!

Have you ever seen a good looking death or a good looking tax

Or maybe she looked good just because I'm over 60
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

Also, not sure if all MkVI's have the radio antenna integrated into the rear window like the GTI, but bear in mind that a metallic film on the rear window will interfere with radio reception. There are films on the market that are non-metallic to allow better RF performance, but it usually comes with a (near negligible) drop in heat and UV reflection performance. Solartint sell a non-metal film called Charcool vs their metallic Onyx film. There's also ceramic based tint films also about, but they're harder to find and pricier. Looks like Solartint use Madico films.. http://www.madico.com/WindowFilms/Auto_Products.asp

Just something to think about, and something no Ming Mole would have any idea about.
