Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi Guys,
I have read a lot of the posts on the site, and are all awesome.
    I hate do be a pain in the butt....but I have a few questions;

    1) Polish/wax.. I know they are 2 different things... does that mean, you have to clean, polish, then wax?

    2) How are the coin operated car washes, where you use their high pressures soak etc. I've heard from a few people that it can leave scratches on your car...

    3) Im not lazy, so I dont mind taking car of my car, but the area I live is uses recycled water on our outside taps...Is that bad for the car?
    - Is it ideal to have a high pressure washer? buffing machine etc.

    4) Does it pay off to have a professional do the twice yearly, wax/polish ?

    5) I get my car in a couple of weeks, and it is black leather...Should I protect it with some sort of spray, lotion straight away, or leave it .... ??

Sorry,i know that all these questions are most likely answered somewhere, so I apologise in advance.

    Great site guys...

1: Yes. Polish takes swirls and marks away from the paint, wax ADDS a layer of wax on top of the paintwork to protect it after you polish.

2: If you use the brushes then yes they will scratch the car up quite bad. If you're just using it for pressure water/pressure soapwater then it's okay, but I think a lot of them will strip wax off of your car because the soap isn't pH balanced.

3: For average care for your car you only need to wash it once or twice a fortnight. Recycled water shouldn't be too bad...just wash it properly (I'm sure you've found out how to wash it using the 2 bucket method on this site ) and rinse it off and dry it lightly and it should be fine.

4: Bigtime! Once my car was done I've washed it once a week in half the time it took me to do it beforehand. and best of all, I only need to top wax up if i want, or get it done again in half a year or so.

5: Sahmpooing and conditioning is always a good move for leather. Carcareproducts sell a nice Duragloss kit that will keep your leather nice as soon as you get it you'll only need to shampoo and condition it every 3 months or so too.

    Hope that helps

Mickey’s advice is on the mark.

Polishing is a defect removal step. You only need to polish when there are defects (scratches, swirls, water marks etc) in the paint.

Waxing or sealing are your protective steps.

With leather interior, you can either clean and condition them regularly or you can apply a synthetic sealant to the leather. Sealing is a good option if there are likely to be kids, dirty sports gear etc in the car that could mark the leather.
