removing gunk/glue left from door trim

I pulled the top trim piece off the doors lastnight as it was cracked up and falling off.

This is what is left behind, how can I clean that stuff off without ruining the paint as I will leave it without a trim piece there.

goof off, or goop off. from bunnings and so on. but test it on an inconspicuous area first. i've seen it take off brand new paint, but leave old paint alone, so user discretion advised.

Cool thanks Jarred, will try on on my project mk1 first. That is getting repainted anyway

That’s going to be a tricky one but products like De-solv-it or Autoglym intensive tar remover will help. You may have to soak an old towel in the product and drape that over the area to allow it to work in. If that doesn't soften it up you may have to pick it off.

I've had some success with neat eucalyptus oil - seems to dissolve some glues well, others it doesn't have any affect on at all. But in all cases it adds a pleasant aroma

As CCP says, sometimes these solvents need time to work their magic.

"Prepwash", also known as wax and grease remover should shift it. It shouldn't hurt the paint either.

Polished and waxed the area afterwards, looked like it never had any gunk on it in the first place:
