  • mk3 rear bumper

hey guys went and got a quote to smooth out my rear bumper today and paint it, the cost was around $600ish. i was thinking more along the lines of doing some of it myself, like sanding back the trim to make it smooth and boging up the little gap just under the trim. anyone done this and has any personal experiences good or bad. thanks

Just keep in mind that every painter has their own way of doing things. Most that I know prefer to sand and prep themselves..... not for the extra cash, but so they know the job is getting done properly and they know exactly what has been done. They may not be happy with your sanding/bogging job and just do it again anyway, making your efforts a waste of time. It's best to consult your painter and find out what you can possibly do to cut costs. But just remember they are the pro's, if you want it looking its best, pay the dollars and get it done properly from start to finish.

    Rhys.

I agree with Rhys, but at the same time I've just come out of a bad situation with a panelbeater that suggests you can SERIOUSLY not trust any of them unless they're your mate.

Ray (rayray086) and Steve (dubsteve) have both been working on bumpers that require smoothing, so they should be able to chime in and give you a bit of a run-down of how it all works. It's definitely not impossible, but it seems to be quite fiddly.

Your going to either have to plastic weld to fill the gap, or use a specialised plastic filler like PlastX. But also at the same time, plastic welding takes a millennium to do on a surface that large BUT you will have to make an aggressive and scarred surface for the filler to stick to anyway, so at least some plastic welding would be a good idea
