Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Why oh why would you want to ruin your car like that. If you want a rust bucket go buy something from the tip, don't ruin a perfectly good car with that crap!!!!!!!
    Cheers,

Totally agree with this sentiment. As a fashion ... it is in my considered opinion

My opinion, looks good on Air Cooled, not on newer Waterpumpers.

I've seen a couple of ratty Mk1's that look good, but those Mk5's don't look right.

Up to them though of course...

          OMG!

It's only a bonnet! It's not even rusty! It's just surface rust.

There's no massive holes in it or the sill panel's & boot floor are falling out of it.

My life is going to end cause the bonnet has a brown rusty look to it.

          What will I ever do?

How am I going to fix this? I have no idea.

          I know.

          I'll replace the bonnet!

The rusty bonnet craze apparently traces its origins to the USA, where it steadily gained popularity amongst the “sport compact” tuning community before spreading to Europe.
That's Bull Euro's were pulling the rusty bonnet way before JDM was

I reckon it looks good when it looks "natural", but having your bonnet completely rusted out and everything else pristine makes it look silly and what it is - done on purpose. I think the "rat" look is about accepting and even embracing imperfection - saying "i don't care, let nature run its course" in a fight club kind-of way. If you have obviously rusted out your bonnet, I think it taints that philosophy, unless you can do it well, then you're onto a winner.

                  I also think rustybonnet_06 is a chop

I kinda like it on new cars like that mk4 bora - because its so unexpected makes it hilarious and interesting to look at.

I love it on aircoolers as I think it looks like it actually rusted and the person is driving it around, saving it from dieing. I'm not such a fan on watercoolers though...It's there car and there money to replace panels so not that big a deal.

I'm going to have a bit of a rant here

I spent 4 years at uni doing an Industrial design degree to work in the automotive design field, which I now do. I see so many cars that have aftermarket crap on them and they make me cringe. A classic is new Monaro-style lights on VT commodores. The monaro lights are a full shade of red lighter thean the rest of the rear end detail piece, are these people blind!!! Anyway, designers design cars to look a certain way, unfortunately 9.5 times out of 10 the design changes once it reaches production due to manufacturing. What has this got to do with this"craze"......

                        Exhibit A

                        Exhibit B

These have full body surface rust, not a finely finished and highly reflective body with a rusted bonnet, that looks like some turd has stripped while parked in the street one night! If the WHOLE car was done tastefully with a nice even rust-like surface with some classy shadow chrome wheels on the other hand, now THAT would look good!

Ok, im feeling better now, time for a valium.....or a frothy

                          That's a good call.

But how many people will wait 70-80 year's to have the original paint/natural surface rust look on there mk5 look like them above! hahaha

Now that's something I'd really like to see.

An 80 year mk5 GTI! hahahaa

As with clothing the following statement applies for everything: "Fashion is fleeting, style is forever."
I think we can safely make the following analogies:
                            Rat look = Mullet
                            Chromies = Big gold chains
                            Stretched Tyres = Skinny jeans
                            Dumped/Airbag Suspension = 80s big hair
                            Cheers,
