new tyres for Superb wagon???

What is the consensus on best new tyres for our wagons?
The originals seem slightly harsh and noisy to me but seem to work well grip wise etc
They are 225/45 R17 but have been told there is more choice and cheaper with 235/45 R17?
Will these fit ok?
What else do I need to consider?
Was thinking michelin or pirelli or similar but happy to be guided?

Our 125TDI was delivered with Pirelli P7 Cinturatos and over 15,000km they've been pretty good. Excellent grip (both in wet and dry conditions), and seem to be wearing quite evenly. I'd recommend looking at these. I run P6s on my Forester and they have worn quite well over the past 40,000km.

After a lot of reading & dabbling, I settled for a changeover to Contis 3s. Mileage at changeover was quite low however neither Skoda nor Dunlop would give me the time of day. Contis A OK - Up to 30ki so far and wearing very well.

Mine is a MY10 3.6Fsi 4x4 Sedan originally fitted with Conti2s ex Prague factory. While they wore evenly & were quiet, they were too soft for the car & wore out in no time. 15 months ago I fitted Dunlop SportsMax TTs & found them to be quite a high performance tyre, but as noisy as hell. This noise problem was basically eliminated once I started running them at 39psi on advice from a tyre specialist. He told me the 225/40/18s should never be run at less than 38psi on a car like the Superb. He also advised me that next time I should get a slightly softer tyre than the Dunlops & recommended the Conti Contact Sport 3 or the Michelin PS3 for larger European performance cars using front or all wheel drive with the sort of track & wheelbase of the Superb 3.6. Interestingly he preferred the Conti3 to the Conti5. Basically, tyres with 5 grooves & the three central ones having as few cross cuts as possible to minimise road noise & block movement which leads to castling/feathering.
I've now got the Conti CS3 on the car & am very happy with them. I bought them for $208/tyre, which is about half what traditional tyre suppliers are asking, after reading a tip given in the Octavia forum. They were delivered free within 24 hours to the door (Sydney) from a mob called International Tyre Trader. My local BP garage fitted & balanced them for $125 for 5 wheels. I can confirm they were the real deal, not dodgy or seconds.
I'm not sure how applicable that is to a FWD only 125 wagon, but the weight & basic configuration of track & wheelbase is little different to yours Phillawed. 235s are cheaper because hey are common to so many cars with the increasingly standard 8" rims. You might like to Google the mob I got mine from to see what they are selling 17" for. I seem to remember they had them pretty cheap compared with bricks & mortar tyre services. They also have places lined up to fit for you, if you don't know one already. Most tyre services will do it if you ask. They all like making money.

My sister had 235/40r18 CSC3 on her EOS. Fronts were bald by 25,000km & the rears were half worn but badly saw-toothed due to lack of regular F-R rotation & bad wheel alignment settings (neither her or her husband have a clue).

Replacement was Michelin PS3 for $220 each (including the nitrogen fill she got sucked into) from Tempe Tyres.

Personally, I think Michelin make the better tyre (not much better but there is a difference).

Re the OPs question about going up to 235/45r17. You can do this providing it doesn't make your speedo read overspeed. I've run 235/45r17 on my Octavia because the speedo was so far out. I've also run 225/55r16 (still 3kph under @ 100kph) & am about to fit some 225/50r17 which will make it about 2kph under @ 100kph which is a bit too accurate but I got the tyres & rims at a good price & they are Bridgestone RE050A so they won't last long anyway. I'll go back to 235/45r17 when that happens. PS3 will only be about $150 each.
