  • Transmission Shudder

Just wondering if anyone has experienced any unusual DSG transmission issues. My MY11 118TSI Wagon has, on occasion, shuddered on a light throttle application when changing from 1st to 2nd, not at any other change. I can't find any consistency to it - apart from the throttle amount. I've tried to note temperature, road angle/condition etc etc, but can't say there is any common environmental circumstance. I've read of DSG problems from other posts, but mainly in VW badged products, not Skoda. Appreciate any comments, as I'm not sure I can replicate the issue when required in front of the service people!

Not sure if you'll thank me for this

VW/Skoda are pretty much the same underneath. You have the same 118TSI engine and DSG7 gearbox as I do in my car, with possibly some slight differences. Most of it is just cosmetic/brand/options, etc.

Take it to a dealer mate, they should fit it up.

Shudder issue is fairly well known in the 7speeds across the board

Thanks for that - that thread link is litany of transmission woes! I was interested in the fuzzy logic posts later in that thread, and wonder if that is a contributor to the problem (if it applies to the Skoda), as I do freeway driving every day. Will tackle the local dealer. Great transmission apart from this problem.......

If you have a Golf then you don't have the same 118TSI engine as a Skoda. You lack 400cc but have a supercharger to compensate.

i was confused too when the 118TSI Jetta came out. In fact, even the VW rep at the drive day didn't know if it was 118TSi 1.4 or 1.8.

Octavia is same engine as 118TSI Passat. I'm not sure why they call them 118TSI because they consistently dyno at 120kw+

Just to close this off - a new clutch system is now on order. I had a knowing look from the consultant when I dropped by this morning at the service centre. He said there are 40 odd on order from Adelaide, and he expected some 4000 were on order by VAG across the country. Said the new one was significantly better. Apparently this problem won't cause a major breakdown, is more of an annoyance. That said, I'd rather have a new one!

My 118tsi Octavia has the same issue, not sure if I have the same 7 speed as the superb? Had it in at the dealer on Wednesday, unfortunately I was unable to replicate the issue during a test drive and their investigations stopped at the point of plugging in the diagnostic ( of course not returning any fault codes). Service manager basically said it was just a quirk of the gearbox and that I should put up with it until it causes a failure!

Somehow I don't put a lot of faith in their fault finding ability, had it in last year when it was slipping out of gear on odd occasions.. Took 2 or 3 visits, 2 weeks in the workshop before they finally figured out to replace the mechatronics unit. I may need to persist or try another workshop.

My problem is specifically from 1st to 2nd, particularly when accelerating from a rolling speed. The guy I spoke to knew exactly what I was talking about, and how to replicate it. Maybe I was just lucky in getting the right guy, so perhaps it's worth trying another workshop. Ironically I raised the issue in the forum so I felt more informed before talking to the service centre because I was concerned it wouldn't happen when I was there and they wouldn't take my word for it! It seems a very widespread problem.

It's been happening for a while now - I'm at around 24K kms, and I reckon it would have started somewhere around 20K. I'm pretty sure it started this year, and I've had the car for 12 months, so that makes sense (typing out loud). It started very slightly, and I wasn't overly concerned until it started actually rattling things inside the cabin! That's only happened once or twice though. Mostly quite mild.
