  • Superb/Passat 6sp/7sp DSG

Can anyone enlighten me as to why both the Superb and Passat TDI's only come with a 6sp DSG whilst the Superb and Passat TSI's come with a 7sp DSG.

I would have thought the TDI's could run at exceptionally lower revs, hence the 7sp DSG would get even better fuel economy? Whereas the TSI's generally run at higher rev's.

Torque capacity of the respective gearboxes.

Maybe it's a torque management issue ie. 7sp doesn't handle the greater torque of the TDi? Or the more even torque spread of the TDi (across a narrower rev band) may be just as effectively managed by the 6sp

as the guys already mentioned, its to do with torque.
"both DSG gearboxes are application-specific. The 6-speed (DQ350) is paired with high torque engines (up to 350 Nm) while the 7-speed (DQ250) variant is more effective in combination with smaller engines and torque outputs of up to 250 Nm."
          more here.

the 7spd dsg boxes found in audi's have a higher torque rating as they're a different dsg configuration.
