  • A golden moment for the 4x4 Superb

I am a regular to fishing lake Eucumbene and regularly have to deal with sloppy ground next to the lake..
Well today was no different with a regular area i go to being a bit sodden and squidgy under tire.

I drove down to my spot, set up my fishing kayak and did 4 hrs of wonderful fishing catching a bag full.. But what happened next is total gold!
I headed back to my car to drive home and saw a SSV Comodore Wagon spiting mud up everywhere about 10 meters from my car..
I so wish i had a camera at the time.. Anyway there wasn't a big 4x4 or tractor anywhere.. and the guy seemed to be suffering despairer, as his car was 4 weeks old.

so i offered to pull him out using my kayak tie downs attached to the tow bar of my car..
Seconds later he was on the hard path near the boat ramp.

I proceeded to tell him about he Superb and then drove through the are he got bogged in and drove out.

    GOLD!

Sad thing was his wife suggested the Skoda and he rejected it.

Yes, I love that Haldex AWD. I pulled the Toyota Hilux out of mud with my T5. http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f136...tml#post622266 that's how good the AWD system is on VAG cars.

But, mate now you need a proper snatch strap for the next time.

Not something i plan to carry, but understanding the engineering of those straps.. the pair of kayak tie downs are going to be replaced this week as they are 1.5 meters longer now.

Just in the interests of fairness VAG are not the only manufacturer to use the Haldex system. Lets not get too cocky about something that is purchased from another manufacturer.

Oh, we know that. But it wasn't in that Toyota.

Ill back that comment by Transporter.. Its a good thing no matter what car its in, unless its ugly like Volvo, Ford, Saab, Landrover, Cadillac, or Buick.

VAG seem to just put it in the best models.. Veyron, Phaeton, Passat, Golf, Tiguan, Transporter, Superb, Octavia, Yetti, A3, A4, A5, A6, A8 and RS series Audi's.

Pretty sure the A4's and above all use a Torsen AWD system rather than Haldex... And I think the Q7 is BorgWarner...

                Bugatti Veyron is Haldex though

In the Volkswagen group the general rule of thumb is transverse engine cars get the haldex system, longitudinal engines get a torsen diff.

I believe that the brand mentioned was Holden.

My comment was about holden, and Transported said he towed out a toyota hilux, so yes valid comment indeed.

It would have been so hard for you not to look smug about it!! Would love to have seen it myself, Mr Commodore Sportswagon being pulled out of the tough stuff by 'that Skoda wagon thingy from Europe, bleh, wouldn't trust one with my money'... hahahaha as you say, GOLD!

We (CanberravRS and me) don't want to argue with you K1W1, we only wanted to share some good experiences. There is no need to get very technical and go into too many details unless it is necessary. Not that we would be putting down another brand or something.

Great Story CanberravRS. Hopefully next time he will listen to the wife come the next car purchase. He might even take the time to have a look at a Skoda himself before dismissing the brand so casually. I have seen some clips of the Superb in some off road scenarios and it seems to cope quite well which was certainly surprising to me any way. There was one or two clips that I was afraid to watch fearing that things might not well for the car that I just chosen to go with.

I have a few Ford fanboys as mates who have spent some time looking at Skoda's and are now finally thinking that there is some merit behind the build of the Skoda's. I'm sure as time goes by the quality of the Skoda's will win through. Adding The Fabia and Yeti to the line up of vehicles sold here can only do Skoda the world of good.

I would love for an Australian manufacturer to produce something like the Skoda vehicles but every time you walk into the show rooms I just can't fine anything that compares. Sure leave the Falcons and Commodores as they are but surely there must be room for other vehicles to be built other than having a big engine on a RWD drive chassis. I suppose we are lucky to have the choice of some impressive foreign brands.
