Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Where do you store your phone?

    hi everybody,

a question for all of you who have a MK3 Octavia RS - where do you store your phone? especially if you have an iphone and connect it up to use carplay?

I have a 6S and it doesn't fit very well into the centre console, also the cabling is messy as hell - was curious if anybody had come up with a better solution

I just sit mine in the driver's door map pocket. Don't bother with CarPlay though, and keep my music on an SD card.

Apparently the FL model (and now Superskoda - possibly also SkodaParts NZ) now have different cup-holder insert thingys, which fit the majority of newer mobiles, even with cases on them...... the original one is OK for an older phone, but newer ones just don't fit.

I've tried storing mine in the centre console bit under the AC controls, but haven't found a short cable yet that sits it all neatly in there, when connecting by Carplay or Android Auto.... it's a shame those functions don't work over bluetooth yet.

But I use them so rarely, that I usually just store mine (it's an older iPhone so it fits) in the cup-holder/fone-holder thingy.

I bought one of the new phone holder, coin holder, key holder thingo's online from the NZ Skoda Shop mentioned previously, cost around $35AUD I think. Just beware, it kind of kills the coffee cup holding ability of the other holder unless you drink tiny coffees.

Holds a Google Pixel XL with case no worries. The only issue is leaving it there with the cable plugged in.
I bought one of these from AliExpress, took a couple of weeks to arrive. 50cm is just enough without having to fish for it between the seats every time.
Work a treat, never had any issues connecting or transmitting data.

I also purchased one of these but it hasn't shown up yet. (ordered over a month ago!!)

I'm pretty sure they make lightning versions with an angled lightning end, the angled Micro USB's I've tried previously are a bit rubbish and delicate.

There are even USB-C, Lightning, Micro USB hydra-cables if you have more one than type of device in the car.
I haven't tried the one I've purchased in the Skoda yet. It seems to transmit data ok from a laptop.

Awesome, thanks - I've bought the updated phone holder from the Skoda place in NZ and hopefully this makes a difference.

Interesting to see the differences between where people store the phone - I have to charge mine as I'm on it most of the day, but Apple Carplay is quite good and I use it for apps such as Spotify as well

I've just discovered the 'RadioApp' for Android (also available for iOS) that does an excellent job of interfacing with Carplay and streams beautifully while using Google maps on Telstra 4G around Melbourne. Steering wheel buttons change stations and has a nice simple GUI.

Use a retractable USB cable to connect your phone so no messy cables. Kmart and the like sell them for peanuts
