Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NE MY14 Elegance - What is the latest Map update?

    Hi everyone,

We have a 2014 Skoda Elegance with Tech Pack. We were at the Skoda dealers yesterday and asked them what the latest map version was for the car. One guy said version 9, but then quickly backtracked and told us version 8, which they charged us $109 (they actually sent us version 7 and passed the buck for the mistake) for. If I didn't know any better I suspect they were trying to sell us a map update that is about to be superseded, as according to what I've found so far, there is a 2016 June update for the Columbus system. Can anyone confirm this? I'm not sure whether the update is tied to any particular skoda model or columbus system as I know in the later models, the columbus system has a few more features.

Anyways, our map version No is ROW2014. Our car Model is NE MY14. So far, the guys at Skoda are playing the "we're not sure" game, and my patience is running out. Does anyone here know what the latest map version is? Any info would be great.

    Chris

Hi Chris, the latest map available is the one loaded into your car. Skoda are not supposedly able to update maps on the O3, although some with MY16 have been able to doenload and update from the Skoda update portal. The official line is that they are working on an update and will be available soon. Note that 'soon' is so far in excess of 12 months. from the look of it, it's a subscription service and someone decided to set the expiry date as the date of delivery and they cannot work out how to extend it, as the map updates appear to be VIN locked.

Thanks for the response smart1. I spoke to a gentlemen from the eurocar upgrades site and he said the same thing, that at the moment, there were no upgrades for our car, but will be at some point in the future (another year...or two? I wouldn't want to rush them). I encountered the subscription issue as well when I checked a while back. The update portal reported that our subscription had expired, and when I click the extend subscription button, I am taken to the european skoda site. I'm very curious about the VIN locked map updates. If it is, I'd love to get my hands on a map file to see how sophisticated this lock really is.

Hi Chris, here is the link posted by one other who's MY16 successfully installed the map update. It doesn't work on my MY14, nor another person whom tried it.

        infotainment-cdn.skoda-auto.com/base/downloaders/HIGH12_P58_MRM_2016_2017/Downloader.exe?ver=636009469796831057&extension=.e xe

give it a go, but remember it is 20 gig.

          Hi Smart1,

Ahh..Thanks for the link. I'm wondering if they seperate the updates by year.... You would think it would be an expensive process to encrypt every map update based on the VIN, unless they have a sophisticated automated system that produces a new map file from the generic map data but with some extra meta-data, generated from the VIN, but then how would the nav system identify this, unless it was also specfically modified to recognise this map file? Maybe when the cars are manufactured and the nav OS is being installed, the VIN of the car is read in...Do you think it might be something in the pre-installed map data? I'm wondering if you can install an original map from the MY16 (from the original disc) into the MY14, and then try that same update for the MY16. Just thinking out loud...Once again, thanks for the link.

          Chris

I've run that link 4 nights in a row on my iMac using Safari and FF and both time out around 3GB and want to start downloading from scratch again. Driving me nuts. Might take my work laptop home and try that in case its a mac thing.

Hugely annoying. That's a crappy downloader if it's not allowing you to resume. Do you drive an elegance as well?
