Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

2008 octy vrs. Wondering if it's got a 'smart' alternator. Can't find any info on this. I don't think it does but need to confirm. What say you. It's not a green line anything

I've never had a conversation with one, so how can anyone comment on their intelligence?

I would say not, nothing I've ever seen with ours would leave me to believe it does whereas my other cars with one usually end up with a flat battery or something along the way. I hate them with a passion and they are the main cause of most electrical problems and why a lot of cars get around with barely charged batteries these days.

I thought all modern cars had 'smart' alternators fitted?
It is only when alternators malfunction that batteries either lose charge or die prematurely.
The new Mazdas have some frighteningly complex system that captures braking energy into a capacitor which then feeds the battery, reducing loads on the alternator and improving economy figures. I'm not sure how much it actually improves consumption though.
Of course you have to use the brakes for that to happen.

            They're a pretty basic alternator.

Only thing that stands out from the old days, is the one-way clutch on the pulley.

Connect a voltmeter to it and you will find out - most modern cars use smart alternators for fuel savings .
