Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MY16 VRS Wagon oddities -What's the deal with wifi?

Picked up a bog stock VRS Wagon brand new recently. I think both backpacks look average at best as the wagon rides to high and the wheels are quite sunken in. I was looking into ebiach 20mm lowering Pro-kit springs and H&R spacers but got scared it would stuff my 5 year warranty and rim insurance but that's another story. I will however be getting the Bluefin Superchips tune box (unlike the dodgy TDI one's it actually controls boost and spark along with fuelling) as it can be removed for serving. A modest 51nm gain and 30hp but DSG will electronically limit the engine to 400nm. The more aggressive ARP / DNA / Revo ECU flashes are moot unless you're running a manual IMO because of that limit. I used ARP reflash of the DQ250 gearbox in my TDI Golf MK6 once which removed the 400nm limit but after a year it started to develop issues getting into reverse... I digress.

That all said, a few things confuse me about the car, firstly the purpose of wifi. Smart link requires the USB cable even though Apple Car play supports wifi connection. The headhunt can either connect to a wireless network, OR act has a wireless router that devices can connect to. It can do both at once, presumably so occupants can all connect to the headunit and in turn it connects to another device for internet, a bit of a guess there.
The navigation can't use the internet for traffic updates, smart link / car play doesn't utilise wifi to sync (it really should though). It can't download updates so far as I know, and the dealer didn't know it even had wifi. What am I missing here? So much potential yet such a useless feature.

Secondly, no pitch adjustment on the seat? Surely it's not just me who finds an annoying gap between the seat and the underside of my knees/thighs? thinking of putting washers under the front seat mounts.

Thirdly, I'm thinking of getting the auto-boot struts and hoping I can program the boot open on the key with VAG-COM VCD. I realise I wouldn't have the boot button on he dash, or the button on the boot itself but it would be handy if I can get just the key to auto / open / close the boot. Anyone know if this is possible?

As a matter of interest, anyone lowered their car yet? thoughts?

The wifi is so you can put a SIM or hotspot to your phone and it acts like a wifi for other users. Reverse is also true. Seems pointless in the Octavia but in the superb you can use it with iPads in the back and stream movies etc.

Re wireless CarPlay. The iPhones can do it, but VW need to update the software maybe hardware to enable it. I had hoped they woukd by Jan. Maybe they have as my car isn't here yet.

Smart link assumes you are using your phone navigation app so that would update if it had traffic. The inbuilt Nav is supposed to use the rda traffic and comes disabled. Haven't tried hotspot in the car as my kids heads are buried in their phones anyway and they have their own net connections.
The electric seats have pitch adjustment, agree flat seats don't match with a "sport" tagged car so No idea why the manual seats aren't also tilt adjustable. I'm in the Skoda because the VW decided nobody wanted electric seat adjustment in the Passat. And actually glad I made the choice as all the goodies do add up and work for me.

using VCDS I turned on WiFi on my 15.5VRs and it allows me to connect my phone via wifi and stream media from from phone to the system and use the car interface to control what is being played. apart from that it's a bit pointless
