Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    2010 Skoda Octavia 90TSI Manual MY11

What do you think its worth/what would you offer

  • #2
    Good car in manual.

The mileage is very low for the age (not necessarily a good thing IMO - machines need to be used).

It's not the cleanest car in the world even though he's had it cleaned - look at the wheels and all the rubbish around the mudguards. Rear discs look rusted out due to lack of use (Skoda really use rubbish parts in that area).

They have all the essentials but are still fairly basic compared to the other Octys. Personally, I couldn't put up with 15" rims and the lightweight front end (50mm struts and small brakes). Also the hatch is less desirable.

I'd offer $8500 and be aiming for $9500 tops. You just have to be a bit upfront and tell him that it's way overpriced in the first place.

I'd be having a real good look at the service records as most low mileage owners try and stretch the time as much as possible. There should be 5 stamps in the book & the brake fluid should have been done in 2013 & this year.

Good advice as usual from Brad.
You would have to think the pads/disks for front/rear are due for replacement at that distance with normal driving. Mind you if they have already been done then the rust in photo means nothing as disks usually develop a rust patina within minutes of having been washed.
I drove my Octavia Mk2 diesel with 15in rims/tyres for years and was more than happy with the ride and handling but the replacement tyres in this size did seem unusually expensive. Wheel size is a personal preference thing.
Look for uneven wear or sawtoothing of tyres, it may need a 4 wheel alignment.
Manual is the better choice at that age but I am not sure if that particular 1.4tsi engine has any issues you have to look out for so others may be able to add more info on that score.
It is a basic spec but as Brad says has all the essentials.....my take is that without the fluff there is less to go wrong.
Really the only criticism I had of my 2007 mk2 was that the standard halogen headlights were barely adequate for country night driving.

I think the seller said the front brakes were recently done so that's a plus. I'm at 168,000km with original pads so the wear rate varies enormously.

The headlights have projector lenses so you could slip an illegal set of HIDs in there. That's what I did. It's a FL model so it needs a non-canbus kit and coding with VCDS. A "canbus friendly" kit with the added resistors will very likely blow the controller (can't remember which one - possibly the BCM?).

Overall it looks a decent car and it's worth what the buyer is willing to pay. I can think of a lot worse cars to throw my money at.

OP: I'm pretty sure that a lot of dealers were selling basic 90tsi manual hatches for around $18-$19k drive away at some stage - nothing like the $25k RRP+ onroads that Skoda were dreaming about. 50% depreciation in 5 years is about right.

We had a surprise where the rear brake pads and discs needed replacing at our recent service. The car had done 70k. We have never had to replace brake pads in any car for 15yrs and the fronts are still good. When I questioned them over it they had no answer but I'm now wondering if the handbrake isn't letting go properly due to the stiff gator problem.

When you lightly apply the brakes the rear brakes engage first to reduce the nose dipping.
The rears on my Mk2 were more worn than the front at 90k km.

^^ yep, rears engage first in Euros to reduce dive. I fully expect my rears to be toast before the fronts as I rarely brake heavily (prefer to predict traffic and Brake lightly).
