Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Canton - Dash Speaker Cover Bent - Need Help

    Hi Guys,

Picked up my RS yesterday and love it. Fantastic car to drive.

I have found the first little problem slash damage though. I didn't notice it until I was driving home from the dealer however the Canton speaker cover that sits in the middle of the dash is bent.

If you look straight at it the right side of the speaker cover it looks like it has been pushed down, you can see the trim behind slightly. I tried to give it a push to see how strong it was and it's a pretty solid cover so I'm thinking this was done at factory and it just wasn't installed straight or pushed hard enough in.

Now my question is does anyone know how to access this cover? Does it just pop out or do you have to go through the dash? If it was any of the other speaker covers I would just forget about it and leave it but when I drive its right there in plain sight.

I've had a few ideas such as sliding a knife behind it and try to push it up but I don't want to damage the dash or the cover. The other idea was putting some wire with a hook through the holes and trying to pull it up. Though I don't know if they will work without damaging anything. I think the best idea would just be to refit it but I don't know how hard this would be.

Anyone have any ideas? I know a lot of people would just leave it be but having just spent a ton of cash it really irks me.

Appears I've answered my own question.

Just had a look at a workshop manual and it looks like the whole dash would have to come out (I could be wrong). Plus I just looked at it again and there is no way I'm getting anything in there to fix it. It looks like whoever put it in didn't quite push it all the way in (I imagine it was pushed in from the opposite side).

Looks like there isn't anything I can do about it. I might mention it one day when it goes in for a service (doubt they will want to fix it, looks like a huge job, plus a lot of people wouldn't even care about it) but apart from that I guess I'll have to live with it.

If anyone has any ideas I'm still open, if not, looks like I'm living with it.

Pretty sure the cover is stuck down with glue or speaker tape mate.

My MY15 RS has a tiny bit peeling away and it creates a nasty vibration, but only while listening to talkback on AM. Must be the frequency of the audio that creates it.

My car is due for its first service soon so will get the dealer to take it out completely, clean and re-install.
