Dumb question? Launch Control

The owners manual for the Octavia 3 has a section on launch control, saying its only available on certain engines.. I don't recall and can't find any mention of it in the brochure, but I figure it it were going to be on anything it would be the RS petrol and maybe the RS diesel.

Does anyone know ? I'm not game to try it to find out (it says disengage traction control and start/stop, put your foot on the brake, then the other foot to the floor and release the brake.

Used it on my old RS. Good fun, seems to let the tyres spin more freely - perhaps TC is in a different mode. You'd look like a wally if you used it at the lights GP though, makes a bit of noise! I didn't need LC to make me look like wally on quick take offs haha, so easy to squeal the tyres in the RS.

There was no documentation about launch control in my MK2/RS - but it is there and available to be used

When you go through the procedure, you will know if it's active, as you press the throttle down the RPM won't go past the RPM that launch control has been programmed for - which is something like 2,850 in my case.

Best to use it on a nice flat road surface - stock Octavia's can get some nasty axle tramp from launch control
(Not just a nice surface without pot holes, I do meant a flat road - i.e. not highly cambered for water runoff)

from memory, to activate:

bring car to a stop. shift to M or S. press traction control button (to turn it off), continue to hold brake pedal and press throttle to bring engine to desired RPM. release brake pedal to 'launch' car.

ive noticed that you cant turn off traction control when the car is moving to get launch control to activate when you next stop. might be different in different revisions of firmware/hardware.

I had launch control on my mk5 golf GTI. It was great fun, but only once a every few months.

- Stop car
- Traction control off
- DSG into Sport
- Foot on and hold the break
- Foot gradually on the accelerator until fully down. The onboard computer will limit the revs to 3.5k
- Foot off the break and then BOOM - car takes off like a rocket

I must try it on the RS. I presume it will be the same as above, but also turn off the auto start/stop?

unfortunately with stage 2+, launch control just means more tyre smoke then traction.
if i "control" the throttle with launch control, then gets going very very quickly

yeah launch control in my RS is a bit pointless, just spins, can take off faster using some finesse, in my stage 1 tiguan on the other it puts you in the back of the seat with all 4 wheels gripping very well.

There's quite a few videos of launch control on various cars but yes in FWD cars it's pretty much only useful for spinning the wheels and getting a bucketload of axle tramp.

I have tried it on my mkIII RS diesel didn't notice any axle tramp or wheel spin, it just got up and got going.
Using the lap timer 0-100 was around 7.6 sec, I have since added a dtuk box and haven't gotten around to re-testing to see what the difference in 0-100 time is

It might be the difference between the diesel and petrol. In my stage 1 mkII petrol the wheels will spin into second gear. I dont get axel tramp, that seems to be if I give it a little less than full throttle, there's a sweet spot where it half grips I think.

It's all about foot control - launch control or not.
Even with the stg 2, I can minimise the wheel spin, reaching tripple figures in 6 secs.

lol i like that last line ! "The vehicle starts off with maximum acceleration." It's not gran turismo .. more like maximum wheel spin ..

Just remember to take it easy on the drivetrain fellas ..
