Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Android Auto for Mk3 Occy RS?

    Hey guys,

My question is: Can a 2015 Mk3 run the new Android Auto on the 8" columbus with a software update? I did a search in the forums but came up with nothing.

    Cheers

So far everything I have seen says no, its a new unit that also has wifi in it. Also why I am waiting 6mths for a new build rather than taking the floor stock My15.5 at the local dealer. The Fabia info says something different though, they are selling them without it but seem to say they will be upgraded to it in 6mths time.

unfortunately anything under my16 doesn't do it without replacing the whole system, which can be done but I don't imagine it to be cheap.

I was lucky enough to have it on mine when I picked up my Mk3 2 weeks ago. I was told by the dealer that it's not just a new software, it's a whole new system.

Ahh true, thought i might have been able to get away with the new features from an upgrade....damn lol. Oh well i can do without it no biggie.

What sort of benefits will the Wifi give the user?? Like hotspotting from your phone so you can use eg. Google from your head unit? Or say spotify?

I haven't actually figured out what the wifi does. Not like every phone isn't a wifi access point these days already. I'm guessing it has its own sim slot.

I believe that you can connect to WiFi hotspots with this feature, though I'm not sure what for. European models have a SIM card slot where the CD player is, inbetween the SDcard slots.

i'm seeing ads on tv showing the android auto features on the new new octavia rs.

with regards to wifi, i'm not sure if its the same situation here - but in my mk2 rs, my phone connects to the bluetooth unit in rsap mode. the car "becomes the sim". in this mode, the car uses its own antenna and does not require the phone anymore. u can even turn off your mobile. the disadvantage with this mode - ur mobile looses its mobile data (3g/4g) connectivity. it becomes disabled as long as it is connected in rsap mode.
the mobile's wifi will continue to be available.

so i'm assuming, if the bluetooth module provides wifi connectivity, then it basically means ur phone will still be connected to the internet, by connecting to the hotspot.

however, i didn't think rsap mode is something many people and/or manufacturers used these days.

No it's something different. From what gather it's so rear seat passengers can connect and control the unit. The superbs have that shown as well as new iPad holders for the back seat. Pity there aren't headrest posts in the RS. I'm still trying to work out how to get iPads in the backseat.

By the way do our cars come with smart gate? It looks interesting but guessing they aren't putting the module in here by default.

i had a discussion with Skoda Australia and was told that Smartgate will not be available here in Australia and that I should throw out the smartgate manual that I received with my car.
But in saying that I see there is a kit that has the smartgate module and cabling to fit this into our cars (P/N 5E0063218 )

Its a dirt cheap module so wonder why they aren't fitting it? Could be a C tick/EMF certification they don't want to do.

I'm thinking about seriously getting one of these kits and fitting it. I don't think its an emf or c tick issue as they are fitted to euro specked ones and they are strict on emf etc.

I can tell you we have much stricter rules on emf, even our wifi is weaker here. I doubt that's it, so weird they don't fit them.

I have a my16 with the wifi and I am yet to work it out. I have been able to connect the car as a device to the home network but when I try to log my phone on to the cars wifi network, it seems to connect but that's it. I was trying to do this so that I could use the Skoda apps that you can download for the App Store. Has anyone had any luck with the apps and got them working?

Also so we were informed when buying the car that it have a sim slot to be able to have a hotspot for data etc but on,y found out when picking the car up that is in not an option in Australia. Was not happy as my daughters were very excited.
