Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Octavia RS wagon too cheap?!?

Article in this Saturday's The Age. In Drive - What cart should I buy. It pitched an A4 Avant 2.0T Quattro v's Ford Modeo Wagon titanium and Skoda Octavia RS wagon.

The wagon was the pick except that it was too cheap?

I presume you mean the Octavia wagon was the pick?

It must be an absolute b**** to be upstaged by a cheaper car. Almost feel sorry for them....almost.

What sporty wagon should I buy?

If it's too cheap for him, he can have mine for $60K...

I am very confused by the 'too cheap' comment, did he mean the cabin of the car? if so, I am pretty sure he did not actually sit in the ford and the skoda to compare the quality, he also mention the Occy RS is missing the Sat nav, and I am pretty sure there is a Sat Nav in our RS as standard.

I don't think there's anything that feels cheap on the RS. It's just too cheap for his set budget of 'about 60k'.

Cheap journalism - the guy probably wrote the article never having driven the car and just doing a "paper" comparison of specs. He may have looked up some other reviews, though surprised he didn't include an SV6 or SS Commodore sportswagon in the mix. Not that I'm a massive fan but if it's the price point and wagon + sports you'd think it would be on the shopping list at least.

Yeah, like the last time I walked into a car dealership I said to the sales guy " I would buy this car from you as it is great and ticks all the boxes, but it doesnt cost enough. If you charge me an extra $15k I will buy it"

Stupid Journo obviously only wants the new subaru as he even only made mild mention of the new golf R wagon.

I think a fe people on here have gone from Liberty to Octavia & the Octavia isn't quite as "quality" as the Liberty was. Octavia is significantly cheaper and definately cheaper to run (and more reliable).

I rarely take notice of what Australian journalists write as they are usually inaccurate, fairly lazy & simply parrot press releases.

Read the article today. This was the decision that I had to make/made. From Liberty 3.0RB to Octy vRS.
I looked at the same cars (amongst others)
vRS was my choice and I don't regret it. It's definitely a different drive to the Liberty and I would say it is a more refined drive with more poke than the 6 cyl Subie and less fuel consumption.
                      I reckon I made a good choice !

Article is pretty flimsy, I didn't read it the way you guys seem to have, in that the requester was asking for around 60k mark, not the journo. Journo was suggesting that he wouldn't be spending the 60k (Although he got the std equip vs options statement wrong !)

In the comments section someone had mentioned adding the Mazda 6 Wagon, to which the buyer "David Baden-Powell" advises it's underpowered and no AWD. Correct - and the Octavia RS is not AWD either - exactly how did this chap come up with his shortlist?
