Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk III Tune Problems in Eco Mode

Just putting a call out to the Skoda crew on behalf of a (computer illiterate) mate who had his Mk3 DSG RS wagon tuned.
He noticed problems with gears slipping in eco mode.

He said that the DSG was revving out between gears - like it's in neutral - the day after the tune was installed.
So he had the tune removed and the problem went away.

He's since had his 15k service and the dealer said that there were program errors, so they cleared the log and it's been running well ever since.

Has anyone had problems like this after a tune on a Mk3?

He told me that he had to sign a indemnity form at the tuners before they would install the tune because some GTIs had experienced turbo oil starvation with the 'Stop-Start' engine functionality as a result of the tune, (there's a massive red flag right there!) but the tuner assured him that problem has been fixed, so he went ahead with it.

I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else out there has experienced any problems or faults like this?
...before I commit to a tune myself!
But I have to admit, it's kinda put me off this particular tune (who I won't name).

    Cheers

I haven't tried ECO mode since i've gone stage 2 and don't intend to. Hated the way the car behaved in eco mode. I think i may have tried it when i was Stage 1, but i don't remember. Never got any of the above mentioned behaviour.

I think i read somewhere that even stock, the stop-start could be starving the turbo from oil, leading to failures. I'm pretty sure i know which tuner he used as they were getting Golf R owners to sign waivers too. They had a high turbo fail rate then the GTI engine.

Didn't know stop start can be so harmful...... I guess I will stop using it, and no, I don't think I will ever use ECO mode.

Was that a tuner reasonably local to you?

The MK7 GTI turbo failure rate has been significant (regardless of stop/start and tuning)

Stop/start is an economy and emissions initiative - I would not be fussed using it myself
(I have always wondered if it reduces the battery life)

Wife has stop/start on her Honda. I find it annoying.

I dunno about batteries but the start cops a pounding. It doesn't seem to help economy in any significant manner either.

I guess the question then is whether the RS is seeing turbo failures the same as the Mk7. Is it just lower numbers and a delay in getting them out there that is delaying that effect?

I'm yet to hear of a RS turbo failing on briskoda but i can't say i visit that site much. Are the engines made in the same place as the GTI?

I don't have bluemotion but if I did I would never use start stop. The amount of $ you would save in fuel is infinitesimal compared with the costs shelling out repairs to your engine and turbo for constant start stop damage down the track (in the future I mean).

Yikes to the turbos failing. Is it the actual turbo failing or is the failing of other components that result to the turbo failing?

It's the actual turbo failing - quality control issue

Assuming the turbos are identical, which they should be, unless there is something else different it would stand to reason that the Octavias will start seeing the issue as well. It could just be a numbers game, the RS came out later than the Mk7 Gti.

They are identical. There has been multiple revisions. Currently at revision G. I have the previous revision T turbo with 18k, 11 of which have been running a tune.

I think its a luck of the draw. Some running old revisions have no issues others running new revisions do.

What are the symptoms of a failing turbo?? is it a gradual thing or just BANG one day??

Sounds like they are not even close to solving it then. Bugger.
