  • Skoda Octavia vRS III - Expected discount at dealers

    Hi all,

Will soon (in the next month or so) be in the market for a vRS, and hoping to get a feel for the the level of discount I might be able to screw...err...extract from the dealer?

The Skoda car configurataratarotor is showing me $ 50 330 driveaway for a MY15 Race Blue Hatch, std rims, tech pack, comfort pack, sunroof, and 2 year extended warranty.

I've read other sites that have mentioned I should be aiming for approx. 10% off the above price.

Interested in your thoughts....happy for you to PM me if you'd prefer.

    Thx in advance!

I've heard of those sorts of discounts... or just a shade under for factory orders.

You can do better for demos in non-preferred colour options but then you likely won't have the options you're looking for either.

So I'd start at your preferred dealer and let them know that you're a serious buyer, exact spec you're after and price you're prepared to pay (say $45,300 would be a good place to start).

It may help if you go there around the end of the month when they're trying to reach a sales target, however this may not have such a big influence given that more than likely it'll be a factory order vs. a car the dealer has on their lot/stock vehicle.

Agree with what was said above. I have it on reasonably good authority that margins on ordered cars are pretty slim. You'll maybe knock some of the dealer delivery off, but the margin on the cars themselves is tight.

If you want a deal, find a car in stock, compromise on spec and haggle!

I find that hard to believe (margin on the vehicle tight) when they easily knock 30% off when they want to clear stock. eg: when theysold all the Roomsters for $18k drive-away when they were $28k RRP and knocking 30% off the Golf Cabrio when they'd been sitting in the holding yard for 2 years.

I think those discounts are generally made possible by significant rebates paid by manufacturers to dealerships to clear out old stock. Always happy to be corrected though!

It's mainly driven by three factors: supply, demand and dealer sales metrics

When dealers have not sold enough cars they get desperate to meet the OEM targets
Mazda for example supply more cars to dealers that are selling well
So if you have a bad month, you'll have less cars to try and sell in a future month

When supply is limited they don't discount

When demand is high they don't discount

I got a good discount on a Mazda3 at the model change over point
Nobody wanted the old model any more
There was surplus supply and low demand
End result was an $8k discount which was 21%

Anybody involved in fleet sales/purchases can work out there is plenty of margin in car prices

Supply of the RSIII is limited so I don't fancy your chances of getting much of a discount

And yet people are getting discounts even with limited stock. Because dealers would sell nothing otherwise if they didn't discount factory orders. No stock and long waits mean they discount or that person walks to another make that has floor stock.

Thanks everyone. Helpful responses. I do have a written quote for a Mondeo Trend with almost identical specs (actually better specs) for $40k drivewaway, with which I can drive around the corner and drive out same day....

We'll see how it goes I guess...

I'll let you know how I get on!

                Thanks again!

The RRP of the trend petrol is $37300+ORC - so 40K on road is not much of a discount.

The Mondeo is a heavy bugger... 1620kg+ and has a normal 6 speed slushbox auto - the result is average performance and thirst.

BTW the trend mondeo doesn't come with 18 inch wheels, Bixenon headlights, full leather upholstery, folding /dimming mirrors, premium sound system, keyless entry or a sunroof. All which you optioned on the vRS

This is not a bad month to be trying to get a discount.

If I was looking at a VRS and bought a Mondeo Trend (not a bad car), I'd always be kicking myself for not going the VRS. But that might just be me

The Mondeo has same or better spec is one thing, how everything feels when you use the car is another thing. Bottoms and controls in an Octavia feels much more solid than any cars in this price range, ergonomic is also top notch, have to drive one to appreciate these things. But each to their own I guess.

From my wife's experience of buying various Fords & Holdens at fleet rates over the years - if I wasn't getting 15%-25% discount as a private buyer I wouldn't buy.

Even the hero cars can be had for some fairly amazing prices. A mate bought a brand new HSV Clubsport at the last model change over for 30% off RRP. It was cheaper than a lot of the 2nd hand ones on CarSales. He was looking at a new SV6 and the dealer asked if he'd be interested in a V8 for the right price.

Yeah though there's only so much margin that the dealer has to play with. It will depend on what the manufacturer is prepared to bring to the table as to what the final price will be. At the moment the manufacturer discount is in the for of some cheap interest rate loans.

Typically the fleet/corporate pricing includes a discount from the manufacturer to secure the larger volumes.

Any yes you can sometimes score a bargain around the time of model change if there's excess stock of the old model.

You'll virtually never get that level of discount on most vehicles (locally-manufactured Fords and Holdens/HSVs excepted) - there simply is not the margin in it.

I should have clarified better. I was specifically referring to the Mondeo, not the Skoda product. We had a Mondeo Titanium Diesel Wagon a few years back and I know what her firm paid for it. It was a brand new model (not on runout). The discount would have made a private buyer that can't negotiate weep.

Octavia III right now - I'd aim for 10% off the drive-away prices shown on the Skoda website.
