Do the Columbus systems have dab capability and if so, can it be activated with vcds?

No DAB support for Columbus in Australia. The closest you can get is this, for in-car DAB - In-Car Radios | DAB Digital Car Radios | Pure.com

Best to check on Briskoda, Andyvee is the guy who's a VCDS guru there. I would think we don't get the necessary hardware for DAB and even if we did the reception will be really poor. The Brits are reporting the same issue. Anyway worth a shot, let us know how you go.

you need the hardware - eg: DAB headunit & aerial. Briskoda has the info.

My understanding is that DAB is woeful in cars in Australia. It's not that they couldn't give it to us in the cars, more that it is pointless. A Merc having it doesn't mean its useful.

Really makes me wonder what the point of rolling out DAB here was for.

I can only speak for my experience in Adelaide, but I have a Roberts DAB+ portable radio and I used to carry it in my previous car (Hyundai Santa Fe) and feed the tranny output through the car's speakers because the quality was so much better than that from the car's FM reception.
Reception radius and reliability were similar from the DAB tranny with its internal aerial inside the car and the FM car radio with external aerial.

I have not bothered with the Octavia Mk3 because despite being fitted with a basic Swing radio the FM reception and sound quality is pretty close to DAB quality. I was not expecting that.
