Yeah I had fun parallel parking up a hill near HQ In at Lucia one day. Vowed to get a manual again the next time.

I never had problems parking on a hill

In stop start traffic the DSG does hold 2nd and bring the clutch in/out/in/out like an annoying taxi driver
I switch to manual and use 1st - problem solved

It was a fairly new rental, reversing on a pretty steep hill and it kept dropping the clutch in and out cause the car to roll forward and almost hit the one in front. I had to manage both the brake and the accelerator together which was nigh impossible, I even tried using both feet. Never had that kind of issue with a normal auto, or even using a manual.

They have improved this on current models with the anti roll feature. Still the DSG can be tricky at low speeds; it is an all or nothing type effect, not good for parking in rutted paddocks for example where car lurches forward, or up on ramps getting a wheel changed. I had one useless mechanic run it off the ramps during a wheel change.

My MK2 has the brake assist feature - I really like it
If you're on/off the throttle that may confuse the car resulting in difficulty
The car won't play nicely when you use both the brake and throttle together

My feet didn't play nicely either. I started having to use the handbrake! Basically if I stopped reversing backwards, the car would start rolling forwards and I'd have to hit the brakes. Not the only one either, just thinking about it every one I hired with DSG did it to me around that area parking. Wish Europcar still had Octavias and Superbs it was awesome knowing that I could fit the same things as in mine for work.

+1: DSG drivers get what they paid $2500 extra for; the ability to surrender control of the transmission to a computer-controlled electro-mechanical gearbox with one too many clutches.

A DSG driver in an Octavia is like a cybernetic organism: Human tissue inside a metal endoskeleton that gets to steer and brake while leaving the engaging and fun part that connects with the engine to the cyborg warner.

The only DSG I'd consider spending my money on would be the Damascus Shami Goat. The difference being when that "DSG" expires at least you can clean your car with it!

But then more than half the pleasure I get from driving is derived from harmonising the operation of clutch, gearbox and engine to produce the desired balance of performance, economy, smoothness and efficiency. And I do nearly all inner city driving - meaning even more fun!

Then again, if we all drove manuals the ad revenue of this site would be much less as more posts seem to be about DSG issues than any other single subject, and the goat can't claim that.

From a quick re-read you'll appreciate that it is the driver's direct involvement in the harmonious operation of the clutch, gearbox and engine that provides the pleasure, not the never-to-be-acquired goat. But each to his own I suppose, providing the other party is not harmed, not that owning a DSG is likely to be risk-free.
