Petrol or diesel?

    Just purchased a new diesel Scout (2015), real difference is effortless cruising and fuel economy. With 1200k 0n clock I'm averaging better than the published combined cycle. Had a diesel SUV prior, in spite of the price difference and the fact that the 'price cycle' doesn't effect the diesel fuel, I calculated that the $ difference was recovered in about 18 months due to the economy.
    Skoda diesel (135kw premium) has fantastic pickup and once you get a handle on the way DSG changes gear and learn to use it, its excellent around town.

    I wouldn't go back to petrol.

      You're not making this decision any easier! I thought it would be simple - loved my old RS so I figured I would go in to the dealer and order another one just in a different colour. Too many decisions, but at least I know it will be a Skoda.

        Congrats, I had diesel DSG Yeti before my Octavia RS(Petrol this time), Yeti was good car to drive around town, I can imagine your Scout can only be a much better car, faster and more power too. Yes the DSG does take sometime to get used to, but it is such a joy to use once you get familiar with it.

          I am sure you will be happy with either fuel. If you are concerned about consumption IMHO the diesel is the go. I have a diesel vRS (125/350) and am very, very happy with it. A friend recently bought a manual petrol of about the same vintage and I resisted driving it for fear that it may be noticeably more powerful. After the drive all I would say was that it was different. The diesel is much more torquey, while the petrol likes the revs more (which is not surprising), but for ‘my style’ of driving the petrol would be no quicker.

              I can easily get that sort of economy on a similar run with my 1.4 petrol. The diesel seems to be better in stop start traffic, although I managed 5.3 today doing a run around town.

                Hands down, diesel kicks ass, esp in a place like Cbr, where a lot of driving is 10-20 min (ok well mine is). ...

                  In Sydney at the moment diesel fuel is 10c a litre cheaper than e10 and around 27c a litre cheaper than 98. Score another point for diesel.

                    My 2 cents... I bought a 2010 (series ii) octy vrs 125 tdi and at present have 160,000km on the clock. It is great! Truly awesome. Also have a 118 tsi in the family and 3 tdi tiguans. Diesel resembling a truck is more applicable to cheaper less refined diesel packages like holden cruze or hyundai diesels, I've had countless friends remark they had no idea they were riding in a diesel. Yes there is a momentary lag off the line, but then a huge surge of power and you're off! For towing, my 125vrs is awesome and steep hill climbs don't even phase the car, it loves climbing hills like a beast! 4.5 years down the track still getting 850km city driving to a $72 caltex diesel fill, closer to 950km+ just highway. It is all down to preference... Windows or mac? Beef or chicken? Diesel or petrol? Diesel for me was the perfect compromise of efficiency and versatility for the sexy rs liftback look. I just love my octy!

                      Back in Canberra, just waiting until next week to drive a diesel Scout. I really need to drive it before making up my mind, but the long delivery times (order now, delivery in November) versus getting one off the lot now makes the diesel even more attractive.

                        Update...

                        Drove the diesel Scout today. Having been so long out of a car, it was hard to pick the differences between it and my old petrol RS. The seats still felt firm, slightly more suspension movement over bumps (which my wife appreciated) but still a firm ride. I was happy that the diesel responds well when pushed.

                        There is another one in stock with the Tech Pack (yay!), sunroof (ho-hum), no electric seats (oh well) so I decided to put down a deposit on it. It was either that or wait until November for delivery!

                        I still have to return to work to go through the whole salary packaging routine so I can't pick it up for another 2 weeks or so.

                          Was that manual or DSG, and what price did you get them down to?

                            It's the DSG version - after all, the DSG is the reason I first when looking at a Skoda many years ago.

                            The price at the moment is $48,500 (excluding additional cost for European plates). That might go up if I add in an additional two years of factory warranty.
