Hi Guys,

I am trading in my Yeti TDI 4x4 for a New MY15 White Octavia vRS Wagon with DSG, looking forward to pick up the car end of this week, Is there anything I need to lookout for upon picking up the car?

As for running in the car, I heard it's more beneficial to run in the car harder, so I am planning to use S mode as much as possible for more hard acceleration and engine braking. Is this the right way to do it? If so should I do this until the Odo hits 15000km?

The manual's recommendations are pretty reasonable and not too draconian, Normal or Sport modes would be fine, but basically don't allow the engine to lug or rev too much (to be honest it would probably be difficult to rev it hard without breaking some sort of law anyway).
I would recommend that you avoid heavy braking and spirited cornering for the first 100 km to bed in tyres and brakes properly.

As far as the pick up points:
-Check the paintwork for any scratches the dealer should fix.
-Plastic brightly coloured transportation blocks have very rarely been left inserted in the front suspension springs. They are not obvious on casual inspection but can be seen if the car is jacked up and the suspension droops. You will know something is wrong when you drive off and front suspension seems very harsh.
-Take a tyre pressure gauge. For some reason every new car I have picked up has had them very over inflated. Maybe it is part of the transportation regime? The recommended tyre pressures are located inside the fuel filler cap.

Main problem with the pick up is your face can get to hurt from grinning too much.

i personally would not use sport mode to run in a new engine, specially the factory sport map.
then again, things might b different with these newer gen engines in the mk3.

Personally...im driving in Normal mode for the first 2000km. At 1500km im taking it in for an oil and oil filter change. Just something ive always done to all my brand new cars. Even after 2000km, i wont be redlining it. Usually wait 4000-5000km. But thats just me. I know some people swear by driving it hard straight away.

I gave my car the beans from the get go. Just make sure your oil temp is up there 90+

I agree I have always had the oil and filter changed at the 1500km mark. And I'll do this to the Rs when I get it, confirmed today it was built on the 17th, just awaiting a spot on a ship over here.

Insist on receiving a copy of the full dealer pre-delivery check list (generally 1 or 2 pages), it should be there but sometimes is not. Check both sets of keys work. And check you have got all the options you ordered!

Also check your wheel nut covers. I had two missing from one rim and took forever to get new ones

I am going to make my own delivery check list, I will base it upon the check sheet you get when you hire a car and then go over it thoroughly to check everything, from tyre pressures, wheel nut tightness, fluid levels, any paint blemishes, operation of all components etc.

Your dealer probably won't allow it as VW say to leave the first fill in for 15,000km.

Of course, if you take it to an independent garage & use a genuine filter then they will never know.

To the OP: I'm in the "firm but not thrashing" school. I have no idea about "S" but on my manual I didn't use 5th or 6th for a few weeks and tried to gradually increase revs until it felt tight.

On my 4x4 Yeti TDI, the S will maintain a higher rev, often choose a lower gear than D, more rev happy, more likely to engine brake going down hill, and far less likely to slip the clutch on 2nd gear(it will slip on 2nd alot to maintain a smooth ride if in D).

That why I thought maybe using S more often can encourage different revs, and put more loads on the engine.

I don't know if that was the correct thinking though, please correct if I was wrong.

I called the service department and they had no issues with me bringing it in and doing it at 1500km. Ill also be doing it every 6 months. Just old habits from owning highly strung 4 bangers. 5000km oil and filter changes and before and after track days.

It sounds logical to me.

My wife just got a new Honda Odyssey. I drive that in S to try & get it bedded-in and spinning nicely. I told the wife to do the same but she just puts it in D. As I always say to her "Take my advice & do what you like". You can apply that almost anywhere.
