Mechanic reckons it is almost certainly a wheel bearing, particularly as humming is much more noticeable on fast right handers when more pressure is on left front wheel (I previously had a left front blow out). So next step, I'm going to try to replace the wheel bearing under warranty.

BTW I am not impressed at all with Conti tyres, I've had 2 blow outs requiring 2 new tyres and car has only done 4,000 km mostly urban driving in Sydney.

Wheel bearings could definitely be causing it in mine, let me know how you go once you try replacing yours.

Had the FPS wheel bearing replaced today.
      What a difference!
      Vibration and thrumming gone.
Had the work done at Alto Skoda Artarmon in Sydney. It was all done under warranty at no cost whatsoever including test drives and wheel balancing.

Alto Skoda Artarmon are also an Audi dealer and have an excellent service facility. Concierges, mechanics, costing clerks, good coffee, courtesy shuttle, very attentive service. $160 per hour labor charge for Skoda technicians, so not cheap, but a terrific customer experience.

Thanks for update, after a couple of weeks now I'm fairly certain my issue is wheel bearing related. as its a MY10 model I'm out of warranty now so will have to get it quoted when I take it in for a service in a few weeks, if its too expensive it might be a DIY job.

Glad it's fixed the issue with yours

I have an 09 model Octavia 1.8 TSI DSG also, was my work car for 5 years (and just gave it to my son for his 21st, when I got the 2015 vRS wagon). I had a booming noise in that for a while but it was different to the thrumming noise just cured in the 15 with the new bearing. The booming noise was at all speeds. Was caused by the tyres. I put new Michelins on the 09 and the booming stopped.

My bearing noise issue on the 15 was also tyre related, in that I suffered a blow out when I had a glancing hit on one of those annoying traffic calming kerbs that councils put in. I am just relating the above as my experience may be helpful for you... Apparently the wheel bearings are not too hard to replace so hopefully it would not be too expensive for you if you do it.
