  • Spare tyre

    Hey guys,

I have a favour to ask...

I am in need of a spare tyre for a day. I accidentally hit a storm drain last night and popped both left hand side tyres. Luckily I was only 2kms from home so I changed the front left and crawled home.

I was hoping that there might be someone in the area (Templestowe Lower/Bulleen) tonight that could drop off a spare to my joint so I can then pop it on to take the care to get all tyres replaced... I will then drop it back off tomorrow night... Car is a 2010 OCt Wagon RS, but pretty sure any octavia will have the same spare.

PM me if anyone can help...

PS: Any chance I can lodge this with the council to say they should cover damages..?? Its in a new part of bulleen that has smooth gutters that you can drive up on and it happened because I gave way to a car (a bit too much way) and didnt see the storm drain till to late. Problem is this storm drain has a massive drop (which is what caused them to pop) - others in the area are fine to drive over...

    Daniel

I'm not in the area Daniel, but I would try other VW forums too - I think the Golf spare should fit?

I had the same thing happen to me, close to home, on the way to drop the kids at school. Guy cut me off and i went onto the road shoulder, where the bitumen had broken off in several places. Punctured both left hand tyres on my then 2 week old RS.. not a happy camper! Good luck.

Unless the storm drain is in disrepair or doesn't comply with normal civil engineering design then your out of luck.

You should still report it though & have a crack - they might redesign it so it doesn't happen again.

Almost any golf / superb / passat / audi A4 wheel will fit

Councils have an out. If they are not aware of something wrong with their equipment, they cannot be held liable. This is why it is so important that you advise councils of any problems with potholes, lose access covers or anything else they are responsible for IN WRITING. A telephone call, or e-mail is not considered acceptable. You have to put it in a letter and then either post it or drop it off. You also need to get it formally acknowledged by it being entered into a register or similar.

It is always worthwhile notifying them of a problem you have had and any damage sustained. Hopefully they will have been made aware of it by someone else. So, by you reporting it before anyone else, you might save someone else an expense. It does not help you, but what goes around, comes around.

          All good in the end...

Took one of the tyres/rims to Jax today with the wifes car, then i'll pick it up tomorrow first thing and swap the punctured tyre and drive the car back to get the other 3 done... bit of a ball breaker but atleast I'll get it done...

Going for the GY F1 AS2 for $240/tyre... Croydon tyres quoted me around $210/tyre but its much further away and im a bit time poor tomoz so decided to go with Jax which is 10min away...

Will definitely keep croydon tyres on my radar for when we need to do the wifes car...

Did you speak to Rubal? And are these 225/40/R18? I got mine for $185 plus $20 delivery to Brisbane.

See post #54 in thread below

Perhaps with the weakening Aussie dollar tyre prices are on the up?

Your comment about local government is incorrect. Email & telephone notification is perfectly acceptable as is using Snap, Solve, Send! on your smart device. If you look in the annual report for the entity it will even have the statistics on how they have received notifications. Source: Wife has 30 years experience in LG plus numerous friends in LG.

Agree about the notification though - they have to know or they can't fix it.

Are you going to get a wheel alignment done when you get the second tyre replaced?

Got all 4 tyres done, plus allignment and for $30 I got them to fill up with Nitrogen...

This week i'll look into lodging a complaint with the council and see what happens.

I can definitely recommend the F1 AS2's.... very grippy... lets hope they last me 40k's...

Nitrogen filling is a massive waste of time and money.

No way its worth the extra money for the "Racing Red" Valve caps and bottle of snake oil.

Fair enough, however not all councils accept such reporting. The last time I checked, Blacktown did not accept Snap, Send, Solve!. The other thing is that not all roads are the responsibility of the council. In NSW, some are the responsibility of the RMS. I am not sure what their stand is on Snap, Send, Solve!

Yeah I loved the 4wd'ers who raved on about how good their trucks went on Nitrogen but what happened when they aired down on a beach or similar. Did they carry a cylinder of nitrogen to reinflate.

The only thing that needs it is an aeroplane as Nitrogen is inert and doesnt pressure up at altitude. So unless you are going to drive above 10000ft its a waste of money ROFL

It gets used in F1 as well but they have double valved tyres and are running at crazy parameters where hundreths of a second count.

The primary reason for its use on aircraft is safety, as nitrogen does not support combustion.

Nitrogen, like other gases, follows the ideal gas laws - that is, pressure is directly proportional to temperature for a fixed mass and volume (for instance, the inside a tyre, which is close enough).
