  • Belt or Chain

Hey Guys, am trying to figure out if my 2008 (Built Jan 2008') Octavia vRS is belt or chain driven? I'm trying to figure out if I'll need to add that to the cost of a major service… I'm up to 208'000kms now (still going strong). I guess the telling clue is there is no mention of a timing belt change in the service handbook (correct me if I'm wrong)

    It'll have a belt.

    They're due every 105,000kms or 7 years.

^^^ as above, it will be belt. Late 2009/early 2010 is when they changed to chain iirc.

There is but it's put in a very subtle manner.

The chain engine has a screw on oil filter at the front left of the engine just forward of the dipstick. It appears like if you screw it off the engine will be covered in oil (it won't).

The belt engine has a cartridge style filter at the front of the engine in the middle. It's accessed from underneath.

If it hasn't been done before then I'd recommend you do it sooner rather than later. It's due anyway so you may as well start ringing around the independants & get a price. You'll want the belt, idler pullies & water pump done - make sure they quote for the lot.

Where do you live and / or work? No pint telling you somewhere near Dural if you live in Sutho.

There's a few threads in the recommended repairers sub-forum that you can look at while waiting on a reply here.

Where abouts in Sydney? I use Exoticars in North Parramatta. There's European Autotech in Mona Vale, Volks Muller in Anagrove, BWA in Seven Hills.

There's a couple of others at 7 hills too - their name escapes me but I'm sure google can assist.
