Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Best car under $50000 - 2014

the results are in from Australia's Best Car Magazine

    http://www.australiasbestcars.com.au/Portals/0/2014/Scoresheets/2014%20Best%20Medium%20Cars%20under$50K.pdf

    Octavia Ambition 103 TSI

Personally, I would have chosen the RS......
    2001 - A4 B6 1.8T Sedan Manual - (sold @ 254,000km)
    2008 - A3 8P 1.9tdi Sportback Manual - (sold 90,000kms)

    2013 - Octavia RS wagon - 1z - Race Blue - TDI - 6M - Leather - MDI - Whispbar S44W - LED interior kit - RVC forward?/retrofit - Mk3 gear shifter
    2021 - Q3 S-Line wagon - F3 - Daytona Grey - Westfalia towbar - no other options available.

Would not disagree that the RS is better than the 103tsi but latter gives better bang for your buck and that is why I think it was selected.

    Warning: I may be biased.

Good wrap for Skoda Australia then! They should be happy, and hope more sales will come through the doors!

            Great results indeed,

Interesting is how the Toyota 2.5L hybrid with the same fuel consumption can score 1 point better in the environment when it has the batteries that will be a huge load on the environment once they need replacing. Leaving alone that its 2.5L engine will be running more on petrol once the batteries age a bit.

Maybe they should also look at how much of the resources are wasted producing the car and also recycling it.

Yes they never seem to include life cost of vehicle when comparing hybrids.

I agree with Gerrycan that the base model 103tsi is the best value for money. You can get a sedan from like 22k! The rs is better no doubt, but for money for metal base model reigns. It's typically the case in most cars though.

Interesting they were so highly placed in most areas though. Once new fabia comes, they might improve in small car too.

WRX was a good drive, albeit a little laggy. Handling was awesome. But the 6MT I didn't like, the fact that the sunroof ate the available headroom in the premium but I couldn't have the premium spec items without it meant I couldn't buy it. Pricing is certainly sharp given it has been $40k for 20 years! It's like a case of Crown lager -$40 for 20 years. Hard to deny it a win over the RS, but in all things personal preferences lead to choice.

Drive best family car award last month too. The bit that stood out to me was the difference in capped price servicing over 3 years. $550 less for Skoda.
