Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hey guys
    was looking at swaping the standed pipes for the aftermarket round ones.
    qustions are what gains do you get?
    how big of a job is it?
    does anyone have standed ones out of there car that i can have to copy?

    I was looking into this mod a little while back, however was told that there's not a lot to be gained from running one of these. It's a bit like a cold air intake - adds a bit of noise with negligible effect on performance. It's more psychological than measurable

    I don't think it's a massive job to do - bolt off and bolt on with a couple of connectors at either end. You should be able to get these as an aftermarket part rather than make yourself. The hardest part of the fabrication would be to get the right connectors as a good seal is essential to making sure there's no boost leaks.... otherwise you'll see a big drop in your performance .

    There's a number on the market for mk6 GTI - probably would fit but best to ask someone that has done the mod on an Octy already what they used - brad????

      I have the Neuspeed inlet pipe (air charge pipe) on my mk6 Gti and did feel a slight benefit over stock ie improved throttle response and slightly earlier boost onset. I also replaced the throttle body coupler with a spulen silicon part as the OEM rubber one was ballooning a little. At the time of Fitment I was stage 2 tuned and now KO4. I also have the Neuspeed turbo outlet pipe to suit KO4 not fitted as the set screw mounting holes don't line up to the block. Neuspeed say they have a new design TOP coming soon. All that being said, I agree with Tigger, IMO the gains are small but they are there.

        I put some generic replacement pipes on my Octavia. Also jasons. You get a little more mid range, probably some on the top end too. Anything that helps airflow will always improve power and torque. For $125 in parts, well worth it IMO

          I knocked out my stage 1 cat, added the round pipes & made some minor mods to my air filter box all at the same time.

          I think the cat removal did the most (ie: you noticed it). The others are what I describe as "tuning items". They probably help but the gains are incremental & minor.

          OP: What mods have you already done?

          If I was doing it again, I'd do it in this order:
          • Remap - pick a brand that is <$1k
          • Stage 1 cat removal - free if you can DIY or buy a downpipe like an SPM for ~$780 (add $50 to get it shortened)
          • Golf R Intercooler - $100-$150 2nd hand plus 4 hours to fit
          • GFB DV+ - ~$120 + 30 m to fit
          • Round pipes - bank on 40 minutes each after your up on stands & undertray off
          • Full coverage undertray - if you can get a cheap one form the wreckers
          • Airbox mods - 30mins labour

          Stuff that I haven't done but would like to try:
          Turbo blanket
          More inlet mods to the air filter

          I've also got the R* coils which are a different spec to stock but I doubt anyone would notice the difference. Cheap insurance for AUD140 a set.

            IMO golf R intercooler is a waste of money. If youre going to the effort of taking the front of the car off, put something much larger in so when you have more power down the track, that part is already done. Can get forge rip-offs for <$400 delivered. I have one. quality is great!

              depends where your starting point is I guess.

              I think going from 32mm core to 38mm with more bars & better internal flow is worth it if you've managed to get the IC for a good price (I paid $110 & it was close to home). If you've already got a 38mm GTI type IC then Golf R / S3 plastic tank or even the early model S3 full alloy unit is too small a jump. Also helps if you are trying to look OEM. It would take a VW expert with a toolkit to realise that my car wasn't stock.

                the good thing about aftermarket FMICs is its sandwiched between the radiator and the AC condenser. the factory would be hard pressed to notice it
